i'm working on Capital's sprites - i haven't replaced the sketch version of his blink asset yet, so currently his eyebrows flash red to ward away predators 😭

making vn is easy you just write a book and then you read back each line from that book and think what facial expression are they making and then you draw each expression and then line by line you add a tag for the face they are making. the best part is you only have to do this a few thousand times

dev work on SSDD has been quiet as I took a month off development after pushing through to finish my closed alpha. it was a good idea! im back excited to work on it again 🐬

like an IDIOT i wrote half my scenes with my characters standing up and half with them sitting down and now thumbnailing me has to work out how to cover up their legs and make the standing sprite poses look like theyre sitting 😭

great little tip i learned - "if config.developer" is useful for stopping test menus from showing up in final builds of your game. clicking start on the main menu jumps to a scene select menu for easy testing, but if you run an exported build it will go to the introduction scene! #vndev #renpy

during testing i discovered the only two times i messed up typing my expression names, they generated two perfect memes describing each character 😭 my bimbo and tsundere... #vndev

ive got sprite flags for Orion in every scene now, but it has made me realise i need to tweak some narration to avoid actions i can't show with sprites 🤦‍♂️ it's starting to feel a lot more like a visual novel finally and not just a folder of text files

yesterdays progress was putting the script aside to focus on reworking the layered image system for orions sprites. i refactored my code to be much more streamlined and added all six draft versions of their expressions, complete with mouth flaps and blinking

i wanted way more flavour (as in not branching) choices in my common route sections but it's really difficult coming up with something that feels big enough to give the weight of a decision but doesn't have enough knock on effect to cause an actual branch...

super rough thumbnails for some sections of the race track. luckily i get to re-use these as the story takes place over multiple laps. current plan is for about 9 different ones, plus some speed lines for action sequences not covered by these #vndev

I've started playing fate: stay night for research - i haven't actually played an action vn before and figured it was the essential one to go for!! taking notes on how it gets more mileage out of panning around a cg, as well as how often you see the same assets

this week: finished common route 1, outlined the second common route scene and wrote about a third of it (and started outlining common route 3). nothing glamorous but solid progress!! #vndev

this week for the common route script i researched motorsports racetrack terms and what makes exciting corners, and in the end i realised i had to design the track in its entirety as if i was making an actual racing game, hahah… what research rabbit holes have your VNs led you down recently? #vndev
