“The Leaving Room” by WLP alumna Amber McBride, MFA ’13 is a novel-in-verse about a girl in between life and death. The book has been longlisted for the National Book Award 2025 in the Young People’s Literature category and will be available to readers on October 14, 2025. Congratulations, Amber!

Emerson’s online Popular Fiction MFA had an IRL PopFic Retreat in July! Along with their first in-person workshops, students enjoyed their time in Boston with a bookstore crawl, an author talk with thriller author Ana Reyes, and more. It was a pleasure to have our online students visit us in Boston!

WLP Associate Professor John Rodzvilla spoke on a comics business panel at the San Diego Comic-Con last month. He discussed the recent trends in author advances, drawing from his research paper, “Who Gets Seen? Who Gets Paid?: Graphic Novels and the #publishingpaidme Hashtag.”

Jonah Markowitz ’99 brings the 1970s to life as production designer for HBO’s Duster. Interviewed about his journey and creative process in Interior Design magazine, Markowitz shares how Emerson, internships, and early mentors helped launch his career in set design. Read more at the link in bio.

Commissioned by ArtsEmerson, the artist collective the 7 Fingers created DUEL REALITY a reimagining of Romeo and Juliet as a high-flying circus showdown. This acrobatic spectacle captivated audiences in Boston and continues to amaze with the Shakespeare Theatre Company in D.C. at Harman Hall.

Visual and Media Arts Professor and filmmaker Kathryn Ramey’s film El Signo Vacío (The Empty Sign) has been awarded the Richard Werbner Award for Visual Anthropology from the Royal Anthropological Institute Film Festival. Congratulations, Professor Ramey, on this incredible recognition!

At the screening of Quentin Tarantino’s personal print of “Pulp Fiction”, Danny Turkiewicz ’16 wondered how easily the print could be stolen. This idea evolved into “Stealing Pulp Fiction”, about a group of Hollywood-wannabes plotting to steal Tarantino’s personal 35mm print from his movie theater.

WLP Assistant Professor Pelin Kıvrak presented original research at the 2025 Society for Novel Studies Biennial Conference at Duke University, exploring how authors’ personal diaries offer insight into the structural and conceptual frameworks of their fiction.

In pursuit of musical history, PA Associate Professor Sariva Goetz created an interactive timeline of female and nonbinary Broadway conductors on MaestraMusic.org. She presented her research last month at the “Maestras on the Broadway Podium” symposium in NYC. Congratulations, Professor Goetz!

Emerson’s own Associate Professor Ougie Pak is heading to Criterion! His new film Red Card, a gritty indie drama inspired by a true story, is streaming June 1 alongside two of his other films in a special Criterion Channel spotlight.
