The car smelled faintly of apples and cinnamon; the trunk was still packed with bags from the orchard. We’d been replaying the weekend in little bursts the whole ride home, laughing about her “adventurous” city-to-country driving, which really just meant I ended up behind the wheel for most of the trip back.
