#BurrOak, #QuercusMacrocarpa, is being #planted by #NYCParks as a #streettree. The leaves are variable in shape making them a little tricky to identify. The bark has raised ridges from a very young age which can be seen on new street #trees. #NYCurbanforest

Trees Count 2025 is here! Trees New York and our #YoungUrbanForester interns joined @NYCparks and inventoried trees at Herbert Von King Park. They inventoried 9 zones and put their identification skills and tree health knowledge in action to support #TreesCount2025!

As summer temperatures soar, let's not forget about our #trees! Here’s how you can help: water deeply near the trunk. #Youngtrees need 15-20 gallons of water per week on average, but every bit helps. Early morning or late evening works best. Help our #treesthrive - thank you!

All trees, especially newly planted #trees, need thorough and deep watering during the spring, summer and fall months. Trees New York and our volunteers #water trees using buckets and hoses. Ideally, a #streettree needs 15 gallons of water per week, but every little bit helps!

#Mulch conserves water, moderates soil temperatures, improves soil structure, and mitigates damage from dogs, people, de-icing salts, and cleaning agents. #Mulchingtrees also helps prevent the #soil in the #treebed from compacting, thus allowing the #tree to absorb more water.

There are so many ways to get involved if you love #trees - starting with #treebed clean up and #soilcultivation! A young #streettree often fails because of a lack of water, made worse by compacted soil and litter which blocks the movement of oxygen and water to the #treesroots.

How many #Kanzan’ (#‘Kwanzan’) cherries did you see blooming this #spring?  It’s double #flowers make it one of the showiest cherries. As a #streettree, branches from #Kanzancherry are often grafted onto the trunks of other cherries that have taller, straighter trunks than ‘Kanzan

Enjoy the #treecanopy this weekend! See if you can still catch a glimpse of #Chokecherry a/k/a #Prunusvirginiana. Called choke cherry because of their sour and bitter fruit, these are used as NYC #streettrees whose purple #leafcultivars usually emerge green and turn purple with exposure to the sun.

We celebrated #ArborDay & #EarthMonth at John Bowne High School. We are helping them expand their #treecanopy on their school campus. Together, we stewarded 38 #trees! Thank you #ConEdison for supporting our youth programs.

We kicked off #earthmonth2025 with a demo #treeplanting event to debut one of our new projects, #TreesWestVillage, with a great group of volunteers who came out to help us plant a #streettree! Our goal is to expand the neighborhood's #urbanforest through #tree planting and maintenance.

We are continuing to plant more street trees as part of our Trees for NYCHA project. To kick off #Earthmonth we planted two trees! We look forward to planting and stewarding more trees this week.
