You can't have a sensible, mature democracy without an independent press. And you certainly can't have a mature deliberative democracy. I don't think I've ever seen a paper on deliberative democracy and press freedom. Mind you, that's hardly surprising.

This isn't a case of whataboutery -- there's little real equivalence here. But what is at stake in the core deliberative concept of an informed citizenry -- with all that that entails for democratic legitimacy.

A useful guidebook, but the conception of deliberative engagement on offer here is incredibly narrow. Mini-publics certainly have their place, but given all that's going on in the world right now, we really need a far broader conception.
