Epicurus encourages a life of calm, estranged from egotistical ambitions, indifferent to accolades, unburdened by popular opinion, unimpressed by affluence, uninspired by opulence, liberated from vain beliefs about fame, too blissfully unremarkable to appear on the turbulent pages of history.

He anticipated quantum indeterminism by 2,300 years. Maybe ... hear him out.

This is why I love Epicurus. The philosopher who nailed Brownian motion and quantum indeterminism also nailed pre-historic epochs and extinction. The methodology of Epicurean Philosophy is an exceptionally fruitful and reliable means to discern the nature of things.

The most frequently used words employed in extant Epicurean texts include "pleasure", "nature", "friendship", "fellowship", "tranquility", "philosophy", "joy", "courage", "security", "self-sufficiency", "choice", "avoidance", "incorruptible", "peacable", "practical", "proper", and "wise"

We feel, therefore, we exist. Our feelings are not simulated. The idea that the Universe is a simulation is nonsense, literally, “non-sensible” in that it dismisses (as being unreal) the very senses that disclose reality. Without our senses, we have no way to test against a false belief.

"I have prepared for you, Fate; and I monitor each of your exploits [...] but when a [life] of affairs has been reduced [for] us, then, we are to live having embraced great [inevitability]. And [...] we recede from [life] with beautiful [grace] loudly exclaiming that, [for] us, 'I have lived well.'"

Epicurus wrote that “we must free ourselves from the prison of everyday affairs and politics”. Regarding political engagement, he issued a stark warning: ΜΗ ΠΟΛΙΤΕΥΕΣΘΑΙ (mè politeúesthai), “do not engage in politics“, unless naturally-inclined to do so.

As it turns out, Philodemus' life in ancient Syria was also irrevocably disrupted due to aggressive expansion by a Jewish kingdom in ancient Palestine. His Hellenic town of Gadara was the site of a proxy war between Jews, Arabs, and an advanced empire to their West. Israel's always been like this.

"Metrodorus was convinced that wisdom was rooted in the body. Plutarch either cites or paraphrases Metrodorus saying something along the lines that all sorts of beautiful and ingenious inventions of the soul were motivated by the pleasure of the belly and a good hope of procuring it."

Marcus Aurelius said the same thing. ... granted, in ancient Rome, nearly half of their year were holidays, punctuated by several holidays per week. In 365 days, we barely get one week.
