Growing up I was a huge Orwell fan, like I own and have read all his books and his 4-volume collected writings. My single favorite thing of the whole is probably his 1940 essay "Boys' Weeklies" which was about twopenny story magazines for boys that were incredibly popular at the time.

This is a Walmart Supercenter in my community, adjacent to a large apartment complex that caters to low-income renters. I highlighted the pedestrian access in green. It is (A) circuitous and (B) doesn't even access the business so requires an extended walk through parking lots and frontage roads.

It feels weird to me whenever Yarvin pops up in my feed. Back when he started blogging I was in my early 20s posting on forums, and some of my online friends were nerds who loved sci fi and history and did stuff like semi-ironically supporting Habsburg restoration as a bit. We were dorks.

One of my pet theories is that one reason for lasting bitterness about the public health measures is that we normally humor people who have bad, incorrect ideas, but temporarily we couldn't afford to do that. They're going to have feelings about it for the rest of their lives.

I just realized something that I never put together before but feels in some way important: the Dirty Harry film series and the classic Columbo TV movies were contemporary works. I feel like you could get something from putting them in conversation, but AFAIK it hasn't been done seriously.
