Help Needed – Hello World! Why Industry Insight is the Missing Link
The Hello World! Startup Summit isn't a classroom exercise; it is a phase change for the way games students are supported in Scotland. As we head rapidly for the holidays, it's time for the Scottish Games Network (me) to do what we always promise: be the 'Honest Architect' for our ecosystem. That means celebrating the victories, acknowledging the foundations we’ve laid, and - most importantly - address the real structural challenges waiting for us in the new year. 2025 has been, frankly, turbulent. We’ve seen national highs - like some of the excellent events springing up across the whole of Scotland, the new talent support from organisations such as SGDA, Game Space (and SGN) - but also the deep, personal impact of global layoffs and job losses across our whole community.

Games Student Numbers Grow 279% Amidst Global Job Crisis, Highlighting Urgent Need for New Skills
The number of undergraduates studying games courses in the UK has skyrocketed by 279% over the last decade, according to a new analysis by TIGA. The data, revealed in a response to a Parliamentary question, shows that 15,450 undergraduates were enrolled in "Computer games and animation" courses in the 2023/24 academic year, compared to just 4,065 in 2013/14. While a strong and growing talent pipeline is a sign of the sector's long-term health and appeal, this massive influx of new talent is arriving at one of the most challenging moments in the industry’s history.

Call for Participants: Stirling PhD Study Explores Experiences of Gamers Aged 65+
Gamer Age Survey: The Scottish Games Network is calling on the community to help support a vital new academic study from the University of Stirling exploring the experiences of video game players aged 65 and over. This is a valuable and often-overlooked area of research that lacks detailed academic work. The study, run by PhD student Eve Maynard. aims to fill that gap by understanding what motivates older adults to play, what barriers they might face, and what impact gaming has on their lives.

UK Games Growth Relief: Scotland Is Ready To Deliver
The Scottish Games Network strongly supports the new open letter from Ukie to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, calling for a new "Games Growth Relief" fund. This push for significant new UK-wide investment is critical and validates the core thesis of our own work. This is a powerful moment for the UK industry. However, the crucial question for Scotland now is: How do we ensure that any new UK funding is strategically leveraged to the greatest effect within Scotland's games ecosystem?
