30 Days of Space - Video Game Edition Day 2 Elite Dangerous on the PC (2014) Elite was a classic open world space trading game of the 80s, and Elite Dangerous is the upgraded and improved version for the 21st century. Same game at heart, but being online, you’ll share the galaxy with others.

April 2026 could not only see a return to the moon in over 50 years, it’s also the 65th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin being the first man in space, so this month I’m doing… 30 Days of Space - Video Game Edition Day 1 Starfield on the XBox One (2023) Skyrim in Space. That pretty much sums it up.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 31 Portal on the PC (2007) One of the smartest games of the last 20 years gets it place here due to the psychotic AI GlaDOS, but it’s the portal gun and the physics involved that make this first person puzzle game a real winner. Top class all round.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 30 Bride of the Robot on the Amiga (1989) An “erotic” sex comedy, the last in the Brad Stallion series that took its cue from the Leisure Suit Larry games. Poor graphics, humour and sound make this game one to miss.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 29 Robotron: 2084 in the Arcade (1982) The classic arcade game that was inspired by Berserk, but dials everything up to 11. Dozens of waves of robots have to be destroyed, whilst avoiding obstacles and saving humans. A top draw twin stick shooter.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 28 Zoids on the ZX Spectrum (1986) A rather odd game based on the robot toy series, that was well rated at the time, but has subsequently been re-evaluated as a bit overly complex and confusing. You certainly need to look hard for the fun here.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 27 Star Wars: Droids on the Amstrad CPC (1988) Like the short lived cartoon series, this is a game that is best forgotten Eve of it stars the most famous robots in pop culture. Poor controls, dull gameplay and basic graphics kills this platformer.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 23 Front Mission 3 on the PS1 (1999) The third in the series of mech based tactical role playing games with giant mechs is the first western release and skews more to the role playing than the tactical side of things.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 25 Arac on the C64 (1986) A cute little flick screen game where you control a robot who has to switch off three reactors, but needs to capture enemies in its net to gain their powers to allow it to get to the reactors. We’ll recovered but sadly forgotten

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 24 Z on the PC (1996) The Bitmap Brothers last hurrah was a real time strategy game without all the fiddly resource management. Infused with the sense of humour they were known for, it was a quick and dirty war game where two groups of robots fight.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 23 I, Robot in the Arcade (1984) The game has nothing to do with any of the stories in Isaac Asimov’s 1950 collection of short stories, but is a 3D shooter that uses flat shaded polygon graphics, one of the first games to do so, but the game is dull.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 22 Robot Messiah on the ZX Spectrum (1985) I’ll try and put a little more effort in to today’s entry, shall I? Robot Messiah is a nice little flick screen platform game. There are other levels with different gameplay, but they are an afterthought.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 21 VectorMan on the Megadrive (1995) A fairly standard run n gun side scrolling shooter where you play a robot made up of green orbs. Seeing as I’ve been drinking since 1pm, that’s about as much as I’m interested in saying about it.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 20 Titanfall 2 on the PS4 (2016) The first Titanfall game was a fun online only first person shooter as players switched between fighting on foot or in giant mechs, but for those who like single player, the second game provided a great campaign mode.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 19 Rise of the Robots on the Amiga (1994) A game that could’ve appeared last month because whilst the graphics are stunning, there’s sloppy controls, limited opponents and little gameplay, shown by it can be beaten by repeating a single move.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 18 Soul of a Robot on the ZX Spectrum (1985) Sequel to the unpronounceable Nonterraqueous, Soul of a Robot is a platform game in which you have five different levels of jump power to avoid hazards and reach platforms.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 17 Virtual On: Cyber Troopers on the Sega Saturn (1996) A one on one fighting game with robots, but with a difference in that it uses both melee and ranged attacks to fight against your enemy. The rudimentary polygons serve the characters well.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 16 Wall-E on the PS2 (2008) Based on the famous Pixar movie and released at the same time, Wall-E is a platform game that follows the plot of the film and allows you to play both Wall-E and EVE. More puzzle than action, fans will love it.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 15 Ranger-X on the Megadrive (1993) Astonishing graphics and a thumping soundtrack mark this mech side scrolling shooter as something a little special, but coming late in the Megadrive’s life, and with little fanfare, it’s something of a hidden gem.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 14 Into the Breach on PC (2018) Playing a lot like Advance Wars, but this time with mechs rather than normal units, Into the Breach is a simple, very accessible game that builds on what Advance Wars did, but adds more depth without losing simplicity.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 13 Escape From the Planet of the Robot Monsters in the Arcade (1989) A rather loving and tongue in cheek pastiche of 1950s Sci-fi movies, all played in an isometric version of Gauntlet, as you have to rescue hostages from alien robots on Planet X

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 12 Chimera on the Amstrad CPC (1985) A Knight Lore clone, that may or may not star a robot as the main character, it’s a bit unclear, but whilst it’s nowhere near as good as the game that inspired it, it has a charm of its own and is a worthy play.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 11 Quazatron on the ZX Spectrum (1986) Initially a Spectrum version of the C64 classic Paradroid, Quazatron tweaked the gameplay and gave it a nice isometric look, and in doing so gave the Speccy a classic title that should be on every Speccy fans list.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 10 Codename Droid: Stryker’s Run Part 2 on the BBC Micro (1987) There might not be any actual droids in this, but there is in the title so I’m claiming it. A defent action platform game, if a little garish in the colour palette.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 9 Battletech on the Megadrive (1994) Combining the gameplay of Desert Strike with giant robots, Battletech is a fun game, that can be very difficult in places, and requires a bit more thought than diving in all guns blazing

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 8 Robocop verses The Terminator on the SNES (1993) Despite a cracking story, based on the comic book of the same name, and some rather nifty presentation, this side scrolling shooter is rather old hat that doesn’t really befit either franchise.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 7 Saint Dragon in the Arcade (1989) A rather odd presentation for a game that’s influenced by R-Type, but one that works and has a few unique gameplay features to make it stand out. Never the most popular, but a well regarded game nevertheless.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 6 Iron Soldier on the Atari Jaguar (1994) A rather an unknown game on a forgotten console, is worthy of being better known, as this first person mech simulator has impressive polygon visuals and allows you to destroy large parts of the environment.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 5 Alien 8 on the ZX Spectrum (1985) The follow-up to Knight Lore has you playing a robot scouring a ship for circuit boards to keep the cryogenically frozen crew alive. Using the same isometric style there are over 120 rooms to explore.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 4 One Man and His Droid on the C64 (1985) Riffing on the BBC sheepdog trials tv show, One Man and His Dog, Droid sees you herding robots through a maze to a teleporter, all in a certain order, all within a time limit. Cheap, but reasonable fun.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 3 Zone of the Enders on the PS2 (2001) Giant mechs in a beat em up with probably too many fighting options and a poor translation and voice acting, is still rather fun and a genre you don’t often see mechs in.

31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 2 Virocop on the Amiga (1995) Virocop isn’t that dissimilar to Berzerk, in that it’s an isometric shooter where the robot DAVE (seriously) has to rid various worlds of viruses. Each world has a cute theme, and whilst the game isn’t deep, it’s fun.

To mark the 70th anniversary of Forbidden Planet and Robbie the Robot, March is.. 31 Days of Robots - Video Game Edition Day 1 Berserk in the Arcade (1980) A classic of the Golden Age of the Arcades, Berserk sees you fighting off very vocal robots whilst escaping from a maze.

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 28 Superman 64 on the N64 (1999) Absolutely the worst Superman, probably the worst N64 game, and easily one of the worst games of all time, there aren’t enough characters to explain how bad it is, suffice to say there isn’t a single good thing here.

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 27 Crazy Kong on the VIC-20 (1984) Rip offs of arcade games were ten a penny on home computers, with varying results, but Crazy Kong is one of the worst. Basic animation and poor collision detection makes jumping over barrels almost impossible.

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 26 Dangerous Streets on the Amiga (1994) A shoddily programmed fighter looking to cash in on the Street Fighter craze had appalling sprites, too few frames of animation and lousy controls. And the box art was ugly as sin. A lamentable effort all round.

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 25 Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Angel of Darkness on PS2 (2003) The first Tomb Raider game on the PS2 should’ve been an absolute smash, but it ended up being the worst of the series. Poor gameplay, controls and gameplay glitches plagued the game.

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 24 Spirit of Speed 1937 on the Dreamcast (1999) For a game called Spirit of Speed, it’s ironic that the load times on this game are unforgivable. The historic context is nice, but with jerky graphics and sluggish controls, the waiting to play is awful.

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 23 Friday the 13th on the NES (1989) Friday the 13th has doesn’t have a good reputation in video games. The 1986 home computer version was poor and this is no better. A drab colour palette and frustratingly difficult gameplay killed the series for years

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 22 Highlander on the C64 (1986) As embarrassing as the original, brilliant, films sequels were, they are nothing compared to the video game, which had horrible graphics, unresponsive controls and terrible collision detection.

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 21 Bubsy 3D on the PS1 (1996) Not a terrible game in an of itself, but being the first 3D platformer, it has the problem that literally ever game that came after it did what it was trying to do far better than it did.

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 20 Sqij! on the ZX Spectrum (1987) A game that is truly unplayable, as a programming error meant that you were incapable of moving your character in any way without hacking into the game. Plus, it looks about 5 years out of date. Shocking.

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 19 Night Trap on the Sega CD (1992) Worthy of note for being one of the first interactive movies, beyond that Night Trap doesn’t have much going for it, with grainy footage, poor acting, limited gameplay and a rather creepy voyeuristic setting.

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 18 JFK Reloaded on PC (2004) Not as completely abhorrent as Custer’s Revenge, this is still a game that really shouldn’t been made in the first place, as you try to replicate the JFK assassination as closely as possible.

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 17 Street Fighter: The Movie in the Arcade (1995) The film was rubbish, and this game version with digitised characters from the movie doesn’t fare much better. The real problem is why play this poor relation when there were already great versions of SF

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 16 Crazy Frog Racer on the PS2 (2005) Yes the annoying ringtone frog got a video game. And it’s just as bad and as irritating as the character himself. A poor Mario Kart / Wipeout knock off that has the frog spout his annoying sounds.

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 15 Super Trolley on the C64 (1988) Super Trolley as a game is fine, as you play a supermarket worker who has to carry out various tasks. The fact that the game was part of Jim’ll Fix It, and has Jimmy Saville himself on the cover is reason to avoid.

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 14 Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis on the GameCube (2003) Aquaman may, harshly, be seen as a bit of a joke, but this repetitive beat em up does him no favours at all by being dull, uninspired, and far too short, with half arsed presentation.

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 13 Street Hawk - Subscribers Edition on the ZX Spectrum (1985) Based on the short lived TV series, this was a hastily programmed shooter thrown out to meet catalogue orders, the game was eventually given away to Crash subscribers.

28 Days of Rubbish - Video Game Edition Day 12 Link: The Faces of Evil on the Philips CD-i (1993) The one time Nintendo allowed another developer to work on one of the premiere titles, and what they got was an unresponsive platformer with atrocious and laughable cut scenes.
