Seventy years ago today in The Loop, Billy Wilder's comedy The Seven Year Itch was a smash hit at the Oriental Theatre. Although only partly visible in this photo, there was a giant Marilyn Monroe figure attached to the venue's marquee during the run—a surefire way to attract crowds!

A combo of classic film noirs opened at McVickers Theatre in The Loop on July 7, 1950: Jules Dassin's wrestling yarn Night and the City, the director's first film made while exiled in Europe, shared a double feature with Nicholas Ray's In a Lonely Place, starring Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame.

Fifty-five years ago, M*A*S*H had its Midwest premiere in The Loop at the United Artists Theatre. Following in the footsteps of critics from the coasts, Chicago's Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert lavished praise on Robert Altman's comedy, and the film remained in heavy rotation in town for years.

In 1987, politicians led the St. Patrick's Day Parade through The Loop, where A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and the original were playing at United Artists; Witchboard, The Stepfather, Angel Heart, and No Mercy were at Dearborn Cinemas; and Lethal Weapon and Chopping Mall were featured at the Woods.

Forty-five years ago, the sleazy Don't Answer the Phone! (1980) premiered at the Chicago Theatre and across Chicagoland. Proving to be a hit in The Loop, the horror film moved to McVickers two weeks later, sharing a triple bill with Welcome Home Brother Charles (1975) and Terror (1978).

Umberto Lenzi's City of the Walking Dead (released as Nightmare City in 1980) premiered in theaters and drive-ins across Chicagoland on March 15, 1985, including the Woods Theatre, where it screened alongside Fighting Mad (Death Force, 1978) and the perennial Night Child (1975).

After the tremendous success of Vixen, owner Oscar Brotman was eager to replicate it by booking the next Russ Meyer film, Cherry, Harry & Raquel!, at his Loop Theatre on March 13, 1970. Lightning struck again, and the film ran for an impressive five months at the venue.
