Craft beer nerd (and homebrewer), science nerd, nerd nerd.
Sign said this brew could only be found at Total Wine 🤷🏻♂️. Roast and toffee aromas make me think bigger beer, but it’s not heavy. Flavors of toffee/caramel fade to a light bready finish. Some lingering sweetness that’s going to go great with the Cardiff Crack (Tri-Tip) on the grill. Cheers!

#BskyBeer
. I had this last night but didn’t record any flavor notes. I had a few before it so I don’t quite remember all the details. I do recall it being fruit forward, medium/big bodied and not dry. It comes in at 7.6% and is all gone 😉 Cheers!

Let the weekend begin! “Beer for Drinking in Bloom”. A 5.2% boh-pils from Timber Ales in New Haven, CT. Beautiful hay aroma, crackery malt with a subtle honey-like sweetness and low bitterness. Cheers!

Went to Stone, Liberty Station, and picked up a crowler of Vertical Epic Ale 09. It’s an 8.6% Belgian Dark Strong with licorice and burnt sugar aromas, chocolate malt and spice flavors. While there, had the Vertical Epic 02 which is a ~7% Golden Strong. Medium bodied goodness. Cheers!

BOTM 3. 5.6% ABV Amber Ale from Caldera in Ashland, OR. Earthy hop aroma (I was expecting citrus based on the use of Centennial and Cascade). Medium body with strong caramel malt flavors and a definite punch of brown malt. Bitterness is balanced. But not of fan of the brown malt. Cheers!

BOTM 2: Fulton Brewing IPA. A traditional nod. A little pine/citrus on the nose. Medium bodied with caramel malts. To me, it’s not balanced. Too bitter for my palate. Cheers!

Last BOTM shipment of the year. This one (1/4) from Fulton Brewing, Minneapolis. The sweet malt and honey aromas are really pleasant. Earthy hops, crackery malt flavors with low/mid bitterness that balances nicely. Really enjoyable sunny day beverage. Cheers!

The brewmasters at Wayfinder are really good. Earthy hops and chocolate aroma. Subtle roast, caramel and chocolate malt flavors. Low bitterness with a touch of lingering sweetness. This is what I’m striving for in my homebrew version of a CDL. Cheers!

Hay and earthy hop aromas. Crackery malt with low bitterness. Something lingers, can’t put my finger on it. Not unpleasant at all, though. This is a real nice warm day companion at 4.4%.

Look at this cute little can 😄. It’s small but loaded with flavor. Earthy hop aroma with grass and crackery malt flavors and solid bitterness. Sierra Nevada just doesn’t disappoint. Cheers!

Just filled out my CA primaries ballot ✅ AI was really helpful in doing some of the heavy research lifting! With so many gubernatorial candidates, it allowed me to narrow down the list so I could spend more time on those that are more closely aligned with my views.

A half-decent site for reading notes on Belgian beers, English bottled beer, and Germans. If you’re interested in thoughts on traditional styles and some old(er) skool beers from an old guy, take a look.

Tepache made a couple years ago. I found it in the back of the fridge. Carb level is low but still tasty. Jalapeño spice is dominant but there’s pineapple, citrus and a hint of cinnamon. It could use a slice of fresh pineapple and ice. 3.7%. Salud!

Was looking to pick up a nice local mid-bodied, hoppy pale ale. Curse these hazies-fooled me. It’s actually clear, tasty, and characterful, but has that soft hazy mouthfeel and not bitter at all. I should have noticed the wheat malts used. 🤦♂️ Oh well. Let the weekend begin! Cheers!

This is a 💎! Rapidly disappearing head. Aromas of fruit and slight funk. Moderately carbonated. Flavor explosion of candied orange and apricots, paired with some phenolics and a surprising amount of residual sweetness. 8 years old but only cellared for 5…3 years in hibernation?🤔 See alt

Just tapped my latest

. A 5.3% Czech Dark Lager. Look at that creamy head that lingers forever. Nutty, roasty aroma. Dark chocolate, deep roast and a hint of toffee. Low bitterness but dries off the palate. I used a different yeast this time and it’s a winner: WLP4030. Cheers!

Old-timey selection from Mike Hess, with updated labeling. Drinks as good as it did many years ago. Grassy/hay aroma leads to a crisp, light bodied beer with bread and toast maltiness and a touch of bitterness. Super enjoyable 5.8% Kolsch style beer. Let the weekend begin! Cheers!

This Flyers team sure is fun to watch. Tough, relentless pressure. In a long series, that effort can wear down an opponent. And the kid, Porter Martone, looks the part. Let’s Go Flyers!

Hay/caramel malt aroma. Toast, light caramel malt, and nutty flavors with light bitterness. Slight residual sweetness. Hojicha is a roasted green tea-Never had it so I can’t say I taste it. Regardless, delicious offering from local Embolden. 4.5% Japanese rice lager. Cheers!

Super busy conference last week in Dallas, TX, but stopped at 3 breweries. No tasting notes, sorry. White Rock-good selection w/ pub food. Manhattan Project-good selection but with better (less pubby) food. Jaquval-small with limited selection but decent menu. All good.

Likely last stop on the SB trip: Validation Ale, Funk Zone. First is a nice smoked wheat (4.3%). Smoke aroma but only slightly ham flavored. 2nd is Belgian Blonde (7%)-looks a like a Belgian ginger hair 😁. A little funk on the nose with some clove and hay flavors. Cool digs. 👍🏻 Cheers!

Stopped at Draughtsmen Aleworks and Solvang Brewing in Solvang today. Pictured is SBC Amber Ale. I’m guessing they use brown malt as it has that distinctive flavor. Both places were nice, though DA was quaint with a better selection (more my style). Cheers!

Probably last post of the day. Institution Ale Co., SB. This is their California Common (4.9%). Roasted nut aroma. Dry, mildly bitter, woody and malty. Clean but could be a bit more expressive. Still enjoyable. Cheers!

Night Lizard Brewing, Santa Barbara. Back is a hefe (6.8%) and front is Pocket Mouse German Pils (4.8%) for me. I get hay aroma with grassy malt flavor and firm bitterness. Mmm. Maybe a hint of lingering astringency. Hefe is fairly nondescript-not much aroma, no spice, no banana. Cheers!

M Special Brewing, Santa Barbara. Left is a tangerine blonde (4.8%) for the wife and farmhouse saison (6.5%) for me. Saison has a firm wine/grape aroma and flavor with some spice. Blonde is light with bit of an orange punch. Both tasty. Cheers!

BOTM 3. Good day for a poolside beer and this is a nice one. Soft citrus aroma. Some straw or light malt flavor with very light citrus and a decent dose of bitterness. Kinda like a session pale ale that drinks like a blonde with an orange slice. Cheers!

The earlier selection was a bust. This is definitely not! Wet blanket/barnyard funk on the nose. Brightly carbonated. Pepper, apricot and lemon, with some funky hay flavors. Finishes very dry but not bone dry. 9% ABV. Immensely enjoyable. Cheers!

BOTM2. 2nd from Ellicottville. I fully expected this to be purple hued. Blackberry on the nose with maybe a hint of sweet malt aroma tucked in there. Tastes like cough syrup gone bad. Curse these jokers for taking a wonderful beer style and f*%#ing with it. 5.2% ABV but 100% 🤮. Not 4 me.

Warm one today in SD. Hay and honey aromas start this one off. Cracker, straw, and some bitterness lend to a refreshing 5% crusher. Don’t know if it’s the label influencing me, but I get a nice lingering flowery note. Cheers!

It pours deep brown with ruby highlights. Beautiful cocoa aroma. Tastes like chocolate covered coffee beans with a spritz of vanilla syrup. If not for the roast and hop bitterness, it might come off a little too sweet. I really like this well brewed 8.2% Baltic Porter. Cheers!

clarity! 😂 *sigh* Earthy hops and cherry esters in the aroma. Toffee, caramel, sweet bready flavors. Mouthfeel is creamy with moderately low carbonation and a better than medium body. Bitterness is restrained. A pretty enjoyable 6.7% ABV Wee Heavy. Cheers!

Was a hot one 🥵 in SD today. Perfect for a crisp Pilsner! After gushing and losing 1/4 of the can, I got dank, citrus/melon hop aromas. Grassy malt with reasonable bitterness. Crisp and tasty. No evidence of infection so not sure why it gushed. Will be more careful with other 3 cans.
