Let's go back to the original Nahuatl (Aztec):
The gulf's name derives from Mexica, the Nahuatl term for the Aztecs. However, in Aztec religion, the gulf was called Chalchiuhtlicueyecatl, or "House of Chalchiuhtlicue", the deity of the seas.
Don't mess with the Aztecs, Mr. Drumpf.
