Historic England release their Heritage At Risk Register every November. Sad to see Hamstall Hall, with its Tudor watchtower and Jacobean pepper pot gateway, still sat on it with seemingly no solution to save it from further ruin.

Had such a lovely time at Bistro 1709 last night. I know most people take a photo of their food but, me being me, I took one of the staircase & beams. Can definitely recommend a meal here in what may be one of Lichfield’s most ancient buildings. Now I just need to find out if it has any ghosts…

To get to last night’s murder mystery in mid-Staffordshire we had to drive through Moddershall Oaks, where a spectral man rides a white horse at a spot the Victorians nicknamed ‘The Frightenings’.

The fifteenth century font at St Chads, Lichfield. Something seems to be scratched into one of its shields. A ragged staff perhaps or some sort of ancient script?

Remains of a medieval building on the banks of Minster Pool, Lichfield. Its exact purpose is a bit of a mystery and that chap carved into stone is keeping schtum about who, or what, he’s peering at through the arch.

At St James, Acton Trussell, Staffordshire, volunteers seeking to understand more about its medieval past and why the church was built on a site isolated from the rest of the village, actually ended up discovering a Romano-British Villa beneath the churchyard.

The building of new estates on the outskirts of Lichfield has revealed several Iron Age sites, a period conspicuously absent from the historical record until these recent developments.

This time last week I cycled from Birmingham to Lichfield and came across this mural along the canal, underneath Spaghetti Junction. I had actually taken a wrong turn and this made me stop and get my bearings. So, thanks to the artist for grabbing my attention!

I love that people keep sending me mysteries to investigate. Today's comes from Tamworth and several skeletons turning up at an ancient chapel where there was never officially a burial ground. ☠️

Very few who walk this lane in Lichfield realise they're likely following in the footsteps of pilgrims. From here they'd take the ferry across Minster Pool to the shrine of St Chad in the Cathedral that was built to house his bones.

Researching Lichfield as a place of pilgrimage. Here in the Head Chapel at the Cathedral, Saint Chad's skull was kept in a painted wooden box and shown from a balcony to pilgrims below.

The name stone of Osgyth, a Saxon woman who lived and died at Lindisfarne in the 8th century. Her name is carved twice, in runes and in Latin capitals. Is this symbolic in some way?

Lovely as Lindisfarne Priory is, what will stay with me is standing here alongside the remains of a tiny 7th century church on the cliff above as the weather seemed to go through all of the seasons in the space of ten minutes and swallows flitted across the fields below.

Back home in Lichfield & went for a walk in the rain at St Chad's. Found the grave of 'a French Gentleman' who died in August 1826 aged 42. Julien Vincent de Gibon was a Baron from Brittany and I suspect one of the many prisoners on parole here in Lichfield during the Napoleonic Wars

Last night in a 17thc pub in Farnham, Surrey I spotted this display case. The handwritten note reads, 'Found in the tunnel behind The Wiliam Cobbett. Butler's chain and a child's shoe'. Then I saw several coins embedded in the flagstone floor. There's definitely something apotropaic afoot here...

My favourite Stoke 'ghost' story is from 1886, when a spectre was spotted in a churchyard near Hanley. A large crowd gathered to see the ghost & started throwing stones at it before two men grabbed it. The spook turned out to be a soldier wafting a white nightdress around the tombs for the lolz 👻
