Richard Whalley d1583 was a very busy man indeed. A politician and important at the Royal Court. However he found time to marry three times and fathered 25 children! His fine alabaster tomb is now sadly relegated to the base of the tower at St Wilfrid's, Screveton. #MonumentsMonday

The three children of Henry Sacheverell d1625 are shown in beautiful detail on the base of his monument at Holy Trinity, Ratcliffe-on-Soar. Sadly a son and daughter died young and are shown swaddled, the other daughter survived, married well but he disapproved and cut her off! #MonumentsMonday

The 13thC tower at St Peter's, Raunds is a fabulous concoction of a bit of everything. Adding more quatrefoils than you realistically need can never be wrong!

St Andrew's, Toddington was designed at great expense in 1867-8 by G.E.Street for Lord Sudeley. Most of the interiors were only completed years later due to financial difficulties and carvings still unfinished, however the rather lovely altar rail is probably by Street himself. #IronworkThursday

The reset Norman Tympanum at St Mary and All Saints, Hawksworth is a fascinating piece. A band of rosettes and wheels surround a large cross which is flanked by the two crucified thieves, to the left there is an incomplete weathered inscription naming the founders of the church. #TympanumTuesday

Found this plaque on the wall of a church yesterday and found it really interesting. I don’t know the date, but to me it has a 17th century feel to it. Does anyone know who it might depict? She seems to have restraints on her wrists and has a sword which may - or may not - be stabbing her side.

A slightly unusual #SteepleSaturday today. A stunningly carved early 19thC slate headstone at St Wilfrid's, Screveton, however I was puzzled because it's most definitely not an image of that church.....that's because it's St Mary's, Car Colston a mile or so down the road!

Sadly St Luke's, Hickling was firmly locked against visitors last weekend but we did at least get to enjoy the south door with its fabulous delicately twiddling 13th/14thC ironwork. #Adoorableday #AdoorableThursday #IronworkThursday

Lovely flowing 14thC tracery at St Mary's, Car Colston, Nottinghamshire. The chancel is larger and higher than the nave which gives it such a light, airy feel and the smart communion rails of 1732 with the little semi-circular projection really suit the space. #TraceryTuesday

I presume Thomas Lund was once Mayor of Newark on Trent which is where he's buried. His brass is rather worn but the tall skeleton with far too many ribs and cheery ouroboros are still visible, sadly death with his scythe top right is now very faint. #MonumentsMonday #MementoMoriMonday
