A 13thC harrowing of hell from the passion cycle at St Michael's, Great Tew. Christ holds his hand out to a small gaggle of kneeling figures in the gaping mouth of Hell and is taking the hand of one, possibly Adam whilst the others hold their arms out desperate to be saved.

A rather worn 14thC effigy of an unknown woman at St Peter's, Hanwell. The foliate cross grave slab next to her is rather lovely, I'm guessing they ended up together here in a dusty corner after a period of church 'tidying'. #MonumentsMonday

A lovely annunciation scene at All Saints, Oakham for #mothersday even if the angel does look rather like he's launching his scroll at Mary! On the left is the coronation of the Virgin and on the right is the expulsion of Adam and Eve, the capitals at Oakham are all rather 'busy'. #SundayStonework

Two churches today for #SteepleSaturday Both built for the local squire William Fortrey by the Wing family of architects. Gaulby with its completely bonkers pinnacles was built by John Wing Snr in 1742 and Kings Norton with its infinitely more serious gothic tower by his son, also John in 1761.

The carvings at St Nicholas, Hatherop were possibly/maybe designed by William Burges in the 1850s, he certainly assisted Henry Clutton during the restoration of the church and this squat characterful bird with his oversized beak and funny ears certainly looks very 'Burges' #Woodensday

A rather lovely corner of St Michael and All Angels, Hallaton. The little octagonal turret in the corner is particularly attractive and unusual but it's obviously the window that should draw your eye today for #TraceryTuesday.

St Andrew's, Wanborough is one of only three English churches to have both a central spire and a western tower. The spire here isn't quite as large as my photo makes it look, more of a junior spire when you see it in person. #SteepleSaturday

I have seen the font at St Mary's, Meysey Hampton described as early English but very much recut. However I'm definitely more inclined to believe Pevsner who states it was provided by James Brooks who rebuilt and restored much of the church in the 1870s. #FontsOnFriday

The absolutely stunning 12thC Virtues triumphing over Vices font at St Peter's, Southrop. In this scene patience is seen scourging wrath. I was particularly taken with the little buildings sitting on top of the arcade, the detail throughout is jaw dropping. #FontsOnFriday

12th/13th/14thC painted draperies in the Galilee Chapel at Durham Cathedral for #TextileTuesday I'm hedging my bets date wise, I've read that the painting of Cuthbert on the right is 12thC but the draperies might be later.

The footrest on the tomb of Ralph Green d.1417 at St Peter's, Lowick seems to be subtly suggesting that he's rather fed up of the status quo and things are about to get interesting! #MonumentsMonday

St Peter's, Raunds is known for its fabulous 15thC wall paintings which include the remnants of what must have been an enormous rood. Six angels remain surrounding where the crucifixion would have been sited, it's still incredibly impressive. #WednesdayWallPaintings

St Swithin's, Quenington boasts two fabulous 12thC doors. The tympanum above the south door depicts the coronation of the Virgin and is apparently the earliest depiction of it still in situ. Also a stunning band of beakheads and who doesn't love a beakhead! #Adoorableday #AdoorableThursday

The 12thC columns of the chancel arch at St Andrew's, Stoke Dry are covered in fantastic carvings of people and animals, most of the meanings lost long ago apart from the occasional obvious image such as the bell ringer. Another of my favourite Rutland churches #SundayStonework

The square Norman font at St Peter's, Brooke is a sturdy affair. Decorated with a simple, elegant arcade pattern it's topped off with a similarly sturdy font cover, the slightly wonky finial just gives it character! #FontsOnFriday

A rather lovely doorway which now leads into the garden at Lyddington Bede House. This would have been part of the long demolished former palace of the Bishop's of Lincoln, the remaining wing became a house and then almshouses around 1600. #Adoorableday #AdoorableThursday
