After a couple weeks of wondering how much Backrooms would cut into the legs for Obsession, turns out the answer was “absolutely not at all.”

Backrooms has already demolished A24's old opening weekend record (Civil War @ $25.5M) after a day and a half of release. It should surpass Marty Supreme ($96M) as their biggest domestic hit ever by Tuesday, Wednesday at the latest.

Backrooms scores the third best preview number ever for a horror film, behind only the two It movies (Chapter One - $13.5M, Chapter Two - $10.5M).

Cool thing about this weekend is that even with a new event opener (plus two smaller wide releases), almost all of the holdovers still managed to hold their own with sub-35% drops. And 9 of the top 10 movies had per-theater-averages above $2k, which has been a rarity post-COVID.

Generally speaking, any horror movie that can triple its opening weekend by the end of its run has had a good box office performance. In 11 days Obsession has already made 3.4x its opening weekend.

I'm fascinated by how much concern I've seen about people idolizing Bear in Obsession vs. how little of that I have actually seen. I do think that speaks to how well Barker threads the needle of making Bear a protagonist that is captivating yet fully unsympathetic by the end.

Obsession is rightly getting a ton of attention for its incredible legs but it looks like Sheep Detectives is also headed for an exceptional hold this weekend, even with Baby Yoda showing up to attract families.

Obsession officially on track for a $21M+ second weekend, up over 20% from its opening. Truly one of the most astonishing box office feats of the decade.
