Mostly dumb movie stuff, some dumb TV stuff too

Remember when the movie previews at multiplexes actually started at the posted showtime? Those were the days.

It's always funny when you're in a dream and your brain makes up a movie you casually accepts as real before quickly realizing it doesn't exist. Like last night when I thought about how Jordan Peele ruined Nope with the sequel co-starring Tom Hanks as a live-action Woody.

Kind of amazed by how well "Trilogy of Error" holds up on rewatch compared to basically every other Simpsons season 12 episode - it's focused, has some fun surprises, and is pretty consistently funny. Also has one of my favorite dumb jokes of the series that stayed in my head over the last 24 years

Funnily enough this is easily the biggest single weekend gross ever for a Lanthimos film, albeit because Poor Things and The Favourite had a much slower rollout and never made over $3M in one weekend - it’ll probably be lucky to make half of what those did domestically.

Unfortunately every time in Blue Moon someone sang the titular song the first version I started thinking of was the cover the mice sing in Babe.

“The Shinning” is a rare case of a 5/5 parody of a 5/5 masterpiece where seeing the parody first (as I did, and several times at that) does not blunt the impact of the original at all.

Look I really like the Mann Miami Vice but a crime movie starring Butler and MBJ with a solid director behind the camera? I’m very game.

One Battle After Another has now outgrossed DiCaprio's last movie Killers of the Flower Moon, and more than doubled the worldwide gross of Paul Thomas Anderson's previous highest grosser, There Will Be Blood ($77.2M). At its current pace it should finish somewhere north of $200M worldwide.

Hype on this felt low to the point that I was wondering if it was another M3GAN 2.0, but it seems to be on track for a higher opening weekend than the original. Being the first big horror release in a month probably helped, but still impressive for a sequel to a movie that wasn't begging for one.

If this estimate holds, One Battle After Another will be only the third #1 opener this year to drop less than 50% in its second weekend, after Sinners and Weapons.

Watching reactions to the new album trickle in somehow reminding me of Spider-Man 3 opening weekend when I slowly watched waves of disappointed and outright angry reactions come in on the Box Office Mojo forums.

As someone that was probably this AI child’s age in 2002 and whose family regularly went to Walmart at the time, I cannot imagine the bleakness of the kind of soul that has this level of nostalgia for the experience.

So One Battle After Another just scored an A CinemaScore. Handedly the reported best of PTA's career (beating Boogie Nights's C) and shocking the second best of Leonardo DiCaprio's career - the only other film of his to score above an A- is Titanic.

Most of the other...non-IP movies (sorry) to score $3M+ in previews post-COVID have been horror with the exceptions of Oppenheimer, Bullet Train, Red One, and The Lost City, so that's a pretty promising start. Not sure it'll reach the $30M heights those did but $25M looks like its in play.

Started thinking about if I could pull off the Bob Ferguson robe ensemble as a Halloween costume during One Battle After Another before realizing that every movie dork with a beard and longish hair is or will soon be thinking the exact same thing this weekend.

Crazy how most of the cast of No Country for Old Men, save for Josh Brolin and Stephen Root, only worked with the Coens on that one movie. Would love to see Bardem, Jones, Harrelson, Macdonald work with them again.

TIL that the kid in No Country for Old Men that gets one of two f-bombs in the entire movie was a young Caleb Landry Jones.
