I am now collecting lots of instruments to play with. 3 completely different implementations of MIDI control is certainly taking some learning... Hopefully things will get easier once I start syncing things up with my PowerMac G5 and the audio interface I've chosen. The hurdles of a beginner! 😆

I've been quiet this week because it's been a mixture of sorting out, and having heartbreak due to rot. I no longer own the Fiesta after that (it went off to help fix an XR3) and the trailer tent you've not even seen yet was a mess of mouldy, rotten materials. See alt text for more. #WeirdCarBS

Viktor's radio is at least working well. I had to do a hack I haven't done in a while, which is adjust the speed from the speakers! It sounds very good. I had to do the azimuth by ear, but wasn't difficult as it was almost spot on anyway! Let's hope the rest of the car repairs this well. #weirdcarbs

I completed my dream. I finally got into resin 3D printing like everybody told me too on Twitter when I posted about the P6 flywheels. I started off easy by printing the gear for the Volvo tape deck; especially as someone already made an STL set for it. It took a few goes, but I got one working! 1/2

Wild to think it's been 4 years to the day when I posted that I'd done a refresh of the Volvo CR-3031 for @mattfd.bsky.social! Hopefully it's still working well?

So the new car. A 1996 Volvo 940 2.3LPT auto SE. The reason I am revealing it early is I am very annoyed with it as it cut out and wouldn't restart. Thankfully we could push it home as it was on our road. Miraculously after sitting at home for a while, it finds the courage to start again! [1/2]

Quite the journey with the new mystery car already! Fixing an electrical fault, planning a fairly major overhaul to the cooling system, flushing fluids and replacing the very sad stock radio and its biscuit-like drive gears! But hopefully the end result means a very reliable workhorse. #weirdcarbs

Well this was an unexpected plan B! The motorhome we had ended up having a load of problems in the first week that were going to be expensive and they didn't want to have it fixed locally, so we ended up returning it for a full refund... [THREAD: 1/5]

A random VW Urban Fox appeared! When was the last time you saw one of these? Honestly, this was the only one I've seen in years. It needs some work, but it's on the road for 5 months for £300! We always said to the owner we'd save it when the time comes and we did! #weirdcarbs

I had planned to make a video about this Goodmans radio that had a very cool feature: The ability to record 2, 20 second voice notes onto the facia: a circuit powered by two small coin cells. Naturally the memo bit is entirely dead so RIP that idea unless I find a working facia... #weirdcarbs

This is going to look so good in the dashboard of the new arrival! New bulbs and green backlighting added. So glad I rescued this stereo from the scrapyard a few years ago. It's the gift that keeps on giving. It sounds as good as it looks. 🥰 #weirdcarbs

We fitted the new alternator this morning and Merle charges nice and steady at idle now! He was also treated to a nice 096 Yuasa battery. #weirdcarbs

Hope everyone had lovely Christmas/Holiday times! I'm back with another "Chloe rejects modern appliances" with a rescued 1988 AEG Lavatherm tumble dryer. After a cleanup and replacing the light for the drum, it works great for 37 years old! See you all in the new year for other exciting updates! 🙂

Nothing to report on cars this week but I did save this 1996 Panasonic NN-5150B that was thrown out. Just had to source a plate and replace a tired fuse. That was it. It cleaned up well, too. It's the new home microwave and the ever indestructible 1992 Goodmans SpeedChef is now for the caravan!

The alternator wasn't working in the video. But by the the night I'd figured it out. Corroded wiring that needed re-termination. I sorted that, then it sprung back into life with healthy charging numbers! Felix really wants to live. #weirdcarbs

Well I can't have done too badly because Felix now runs and idles for the first time since 2018! Obviously not perfect as the carb is only base set and running on slightly old fuel, but not bad for a proof of concept! He even moves too! #weirdcarbs

What have I learned today? That I should never have complained about servicing SU carbs because Weber ones are a whole world of their own uniquely complicated pain! #weirdcarbs

A nice treat for Noah since he's here to stay. Got it for a great price. Needs some work as it's been sat for years but it's a good working base so far. Will keep you all updated. #weirdcarbs #oldcarbs #retroradio

A funny day: Towing Ronald back from an event, the Sony double DIN stereo is overheating and malfunctioning, Ronald lost one of his incredibly rare hubcaps somewhere, his fridge fell apart and needed sorting, then the drain hose on the dishwasher packed in. I hope the rest of the week is better! 😅

Ever since I restored my 1971 Akai CR-80D 8 track recorder & restored my cartridges by cleaning them & replacing their felt pads, I've been listening to 8 track a lot as a background listening format. It may not be quite as high quality as cassette but it's still very good. #retroaudio #1970s #akai

So, after fitting the unit to Merle, I found out A: the accessory switch on these is VERY important and B: the tuner module is malfunctioning on it. But it's totally fine otherwise! Nevertheless, bought another unit so I have spares. But it's the 'R' variant. Still think I prefer the other display.

I cannot describe the pain it took me to get this stereo fixed up and installed in Merle. I also had to modify the Ford trim since Ford head units of this era apparently weren't fully double DIN! But don't worry, I didn't cut a perfect trim. This was cracked anyway. But it looks and sounds good. 😀

Oh yeah, I am liking the SimpleNG mod for BeamNG. I can drive a car we used to own! A Proton Saga! I should get back into doing BeamNG virtual photography. This wasn't a bad practice run, though. #weirdcarbs #beamng #virtualphotography

The custom spec Volvo SC-805 is ready for my friend! First time I'd built a proper custom rig for someone else. It sounds great and actually changed the way I do thing on my radio desk with regards to diagnostics of radios with class D amps. It should serve him well on his canal boat! #weirdcarbs

Been a while since I last decoded a unit at the firmware level! Such was the case for this Volvo SC-805 I got for a friend's canal boat Hi-Fi project. I had to reflash the firmware with one where the code was known. It worked perfectly! Onwards to getting it up to spec! #weirdcarbs #radiodecoding
