The Forgotten Garden has gotten me thinking though. As writer's we're often told to not use Big Words as it can come off as pretentious and like we're trying too hard. But idk. This book has introduced me to almost a dozen new words that I had never heard and had to google and I LIKE that! #booksky

Good morning~ I decided to read a non-Tolkien book before picking up Two Towers, only to discover this book (which I've been really excited to read ever since I thrifted it on Beltane) was published by Allen & Unwin - the same people who published The Hobbit and LOTR back in the day!

Skipping Day 2 bc fancasts don't interest me personally. My inspiration for the stories in ToSN came about from my own desire to see more queer characters (of all varieties) in fantasy stories. There's also a healthy dose of inspiration from Tolkien in there, too of course. 😅

I actually really dislike trope lists but I know so many others like them, so: Found Family is the one that runs through all the stories in Tales of Shady Nook. I've also got Breaking Curses, Magical Beings. There's more I'm sure but tbh I hadn't thought abt tropes until this prompt and it's 2:40am

I don't know if this counts as weird or not, but all the place names in ToSN are taken from places that meant a lot to me as a kid. Shady Nook was a road, for example. Deer Creek used to be an outdoor concert venue. I lack photos from my childhood so I wanted to immortalize them in my stories.
