3/3 So birds sing by making 1 or 2 notes simultaneously, the notes can vary in pitch, duration, abruptness of onset/offset. Probably other things but the thing that humans do while singing that birds mostly can’t is adjust the “timbre” of the sound. Birders, birdsong folks please correct as needed.

Each syrinx acts like a larynx, kind of like an oboe reed (double reed). The air coming up from the lung causes the syrinx valve to vibrate. The rate of vibration can be tuned to modulate pitch. Humans can further change the sound by adjusting articulations above the larynx. Birds mostly can’t. 2/n

Ok, so I’m not a bird expert. But this is a cool question. Here’s the little bit I know (about some birds - basically parrot-types, I think). Above their lungs, before the bronchial merge into the trachea, there are two little valves, one on each side, called syringes (singular: syrinx). 1/n
