I think Turkey can contribute to European defense, but such a partnership will cost to Europe as well as to Turkey. The question is whether they are aware of what they are signing for. My new article:

I wrote The Poverty of Turkish Opposition and Its Obsession with Elections The future of the opposition—and Turkey’s democracy—depends not on the ballot box, opinion polls, the economy, or natural disasters, but on their willingness to confront Erdoğan.

The Poverty of Turkish Opposition and Its Obsession with Elections
Opposing authoritarian leaders is a formidable challenge, as they wield state resources to suppress dissent. Over two decades, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has methodically dismantled democratic institutions and consolidated authoritarian power. His power is unrivaled, yet not unchallenged.

Turkish foreign policy is at its peak this month: -Assad's gone and Turkey-backed groups are politically strong, -Blinken, who previously ignored Turkey at the Israel-Gaza war, is now in Ankara to discuss Syria, -Ethiopia and Somalia have reached a landmark agreement through Turkish mediation.

This remains a super prescient book on AKP-led Turkey’s continued efforts to position itself as mediator. Despite lots of failures (Iran, Syria, Palestine), Erdoğan continues, pushing Turkey’s geopolitics and multifaceted identity. Why? Because a mediator role means you get to leverage both sides.

Turkey’s intelligence chief, İbrahim Kalın, visited the Umayyad Mosque to pray. This symbolically means a lot for the AKP to show their "diplomatic victory" in Syria. While challenges remain in Syria, it will be used a lot by Erdoğan to divert attention from the country’s economic problems.

Let's set the record straight: Turkey may have outlasted Assad and positioned itself on the winning side for now, but this war was neither heroic nor a stroke of genius. It has devastated millions of lives, torn apart families, and inflicted unimaginable suffering.

Erdoğan yine sağa sinyal verip sola döndü. Suriye'de ABD'nin desteklediği YPG'ye karşı askerî harekattan bahsederken birdenbire Türkiye kontrolündeki güçler Rusya ve İran'ın desteklediği Esad'a karşı saldırıya geçti. Bunu nasıl anlamak gerekir?

Putin Ukrayna'da orta menzilli balistik füze kullanmadan önce ABD'ye haber vermiş. Bunu niye yapmış? Çünkü Batı'nın nükleer silah kullandığını zannedip hemen karşılık vermesi gibi vahim bir yanlış anlamayı önlemek istemiş. +++
