Healthcare professionals from around the country attended our second emphysema symposium last month. The event aimed to enhance knowledge of emphysema, referrals, specialist treatments and screening programmes. Next year's event is being planned with international presenters hoping to join us.

A man who was diagnosed with heart failure in his 50s has completed a half marathon with his cardiologist Dr Kristian Skinner. Jeremy Shearing was diagnosed with heart failure in his early 50s in April 2024, due to a genetic condition. They've raised funds for the Norfolk Heart Trust.

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month. In 2024, the Norwich Screening Centre at the Quadram Institute carried out 1,974 procedures. 117 cancers were found and 411 high risk polyps were detected and removed. Of the cancers detected, 48% were identified at stage one or two and 28% at stage three.

Congratulations to Senior Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Gastroenterology, Prarthana Kalgaonkar, who has been awarded the Dr Falk Prize. Her research found that using intestinal ultrasound (IUS) is a valuable, non-invasive imaging technique for investigating children with suspected IBD.

Congratulations to Sandra Hughes, Site Matron, who's retiring today after over 28 years of NHS service. Sandy leaves a legacy of deep care, compassion and commitment to seeing NNUH thrive. Thank you Sandy for the hard work and dedication you've always shown.

After 24 years April Lambert, Clinical Coding Support Clerk, retires today. April has been a familiar and friendly face across the hospital since 2002, from her early days in out-patient departments to becoming a key part of the Clinical Coding Support team. She will be truly missed.

Happy retirement and thank you to Kit Holland who retires today after working here for over 34 years. Kit initially joined us as a midwife then worked in several departments including NICU, Oncology and Research before joining the Breast Care Team as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.

Our Neonatal Speech & Language Therapy team applied to the BookTrust for Baby Bookstart packs for our families earlier this month. Parents'/carers' voice can have a comforting effect and this, especially whilst holding their baby, can help stabilise heart rate and oxygen saturation levels.

Today we thank our amazing cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS') who work across our cancer services. We offer world-class treatments to more than 5000 newly diagnosed patients every year. CNS' play an important role within our MDTs in treating and managing cancer patients.

An enhanced rehab area on Earsham ward is helping people return straight home. The orthogeriatric ward cares for patients who have a fractured neck of femur (hip). The initiative has resulted in improved outcomes for some patients who no longer need to go to another healthcare-based setting.
