Current Arkansan. I miss Lawrence, KS. Let's talk movies and such.
I'm just not convinced y'all even remember this scene where Ryan Gosling makes a dog dance to Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark." ("The Place Beyond the Pines", 2013).

Haven't liked an Emerald Fennell movie yet but some sick part of me kinda wants to see Wuthering Heights.

Tracking down some of the Oscar-nominated shorts and this one's really...something. A dystopian society where kissing is punishable by death and retail transactions are conducted through casual violence (a series of slaps). The French are so weird. Recommended. (YouTube).

Celebrating Catherine O'Hara tonight with A Mighty Wind. Mitch and Mickey are so adorable! A tad underrated in the Christopher Guest canon. Very funny.

Caught up with Linklater's Blue Moon this weekend. Between this and The Lowdown, Ethan Hawke is out there absolutely killing it.

Ralph Fiennes goes full batshit heavy metal in The Bone Temple. Incredible performance. Jack O' Connell is great too, very scary, definitely channelling a bit of Alex and his "droogs" from Clockwork Orange. Hope audiences can dig this.

Nic Cage is somewhere nearby in Little Rock filming a movie called "Best Pancakes in the County"?? Won't rest until I meet him...

Went to see "Is This Thing On?" today. Bradley Cooper got so tired of people thinking of him as a self-important Oscar-chaser that he's like, okay, in my new film I'll just play a really goofy dude named "Balls."

Kind of in the movie for pure schlock entertainment this weekend. Thinking about seeing the movie where the monkey gets rabies from a mongoose and bites off everyone's face.

Was having a virtual therapy appointment while the January 6 insurrection unfolded and the therapist was clearly just as anxious about it all.

Catching up on some Oscar contenders and this one is a helluva flick. A potent political revenge film that partly plays out like a farcical road movie before a long sequence that finally locks in and won't let you look away (literally, with a 13 minute static single take).

My NYE tradition of the last few years is watching The Hudsucker Proxy. Happy New Year's, pals! Let's hope 2026 is better. Maybe the Coens will reunite??

Good movies set around New Year's? (Besides When Harry Met Sally, The Apartment, and The Hudsucker Proxy).

An already anxious person probably shouldn't see a Safdie movie on Christmas Day but off I go to Marty Supreme. Send thoughts and prayers.

Forget the Ella McCay challenge, have you taken the Hamnet Challenge, which is trying not to cry during Hamnet? I failed it yesterday. (But only at the very end. Actually found parts of this to be quite flat).

Terrible news unfolding about Rob Reiner and his wife. Stand By Me is one of my favorite films of all time. I can quote most of it.

Wake Up Dead Man: always happy to spend more time with our buddy Benoit Blanc and Josh O'Connor is really terrific. Great-looking film too. We hope Rian Johnson tells Netflix to go fuck themselves now that his contract is complete. Wanna see the next one in a room full of humans.

The world's greatest actor emerges from seven long years of self-imposed exile and the first thing he does is...deliver a very lengthy, very graphic monologue involving an explosive bowel movement. (Sad to say but I didn't much care for Anemone).

Okay, okay, I watched the "dog's POV" horror flick. Does it ever transcend its gimmick? Not really. But there are a few creepy bits and the final scene is strangely touching and that dog's a helluva actor. Hope he gets offered some more great roles!

Wondered to myself, "What's Nic Cage doing lately?" Looked it up and turns out he's in a new religious horror film called "The Carpenter's Son" where he plays Joseph alongside FKA Twigs as Mary. Well, that sounds about right.

Bugonia: it got under my skin but also kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. Was prepared to laugh off its final (not too surprising) "twist" but then there's a long montage that's really affecting. Anyway, really glad that Yorgos can somehow get stuff like this made and on a lot of screens.

House of Dynamite: not really the kind of film I want from Kathryn Bigelow but I still found it tense and effective and maybe not as ambiguous as the angry posts on social media would lead you to believe.

A Springsteen biopic but focusing ONLY on the short window of time time he got profoundly depressed, read a bunch of Flannery O'Connor, and wrote a quiet haunted masterpiece? You can bet I'll be there opening day!

Just about the only thing Facebook is good for these days is reminding me of random shit like the 12th anniversary of the time I came across Ed Begley Jr hawking his sodas at some kind of health fair park event in Lawrence.

Do y'all even remember that Tim Blake Nelson made a version of Othello called "O" (2001) which is set in the world of prep school basketball, stars Josh Hartnett as Iago (Hugo), and was initially deemed too controversial to release in the wake of Columbine??
