On Dec. 15, Rep. Terri Sewell and Rep. Shomari Figures urged the University of Alabama to reinstate the student magazines Alice and Nineteen Fifty-Six.

In less than 72 hours hundreds of donors from across the US (even Auburn) rallied to defend the free speech rights of students who were silenced by the University of Alabama. Thanks to your help, MASTHEAD will be able to independently publish magazines by the staffs of Alice and Nineteen Fifty-Six.

We’ve nearly reached our goal of raising $25,000 for the student-journalists at Alice and Nineteen Fifty-Six. This outpouring of support will grant students the ability to focus on being creators and truthtellers instead of having to worry about money.

The community showed up for our student-journalists today. In a single day you all donated $13,140 to support the staffs of Alice and Nineteen Fifty-Six as they seek to publish independent magazines. 159 donors contributed to this incredible total, far exceeding our hopes for Day 1.

On Dec. 1, university officials told student journalists at Nineteen Fifty-Six, a magazine celebrating Black student culture, and Alice, a magazine centered on women’s fashion and lifestyle, that their publications would be shuttered immediately.

We continue to advocate for diversity in student media by funding mentorship programs for student journalists of color, sending students to conferences, funding events that foster honest dialogue, hosting panels connecting students w/ media professionals and aiding students in financial emergencies
