Devils Tower in NE Wyoming got its name from an inaccurate translation. During an 1875 scientific expedition, Lieutenant Colonel Richard Dodge's journal entry recorded that "the Indians call this place 'bad god's tower,'" which he then modified to "Devil's Tower".

The view on the Madison River when fly fishing.

In June I tried fly fishing, from the bow of a drift boat near Big Sky, Montana, on the Madison River in West Yellowstone. The bait depends on timing of local hatches, today it was caddisfly larvae that we were mimicking, using a double nymph rig with either 2 nymph flies or 1 nymph and 1 fish egg.

45 minutes from Seattle, the Twin Falls Natural Area.

Seattle area hiking: Fort Ward Park and Twin Falls natural area. You can find old growth Douglass fir, this one is 300 feet tall, 12 feet in diameter, probably 1200 years old.

Can you find the eggs? Joel Soisson gives a wildlife lecture on the invisible eggs of a killdeer (charadrius vociferus). Its two-syllable bird call reportedly sounds like "kill deer."

Near Seattle, enjoy the Bainbridge Island retreat of Joel and Claudia Soisson. The front yard is filled with Joel's driftwood sculptures (which is what happens when there is too big a gap between Trekkies sequels).

I made a brief stop just south of Portland, Oregon, at the house of Abel (Milt), where I continued my shrewd plan to be fed by close friends and meet their dogs.

While passing through Eugene, Oregon, I stayed in a Yurt with a coat of arms watching me sleep. And dined with Jordan Mackay (featured in THE TRUTH ABOUT MARRIAGE), who gave me a copy of his amazing newly-published fantasy-adventure novel, Children of Eld.

The farmers on Santo Antão have maintained the cobblestone trails for hundreds of years, so they can pack out donkeys loaded with the harvest. This island supplies most of the country’s produce.

Santo Antão is Cape Verde's garden island. There is no airport, you take a $15 ferry from Mindelo. The food was a standard deviation better, because everything is farm fresh. I hiked with a guide 9 km (5.6 miles), descended 1500 meters (5000 feet) from the top of the dormant volcano.

Casa Tchicau a very small restaurant up on a hill in Mindelo. It's basically in one person's house with only a few tables. There's no menu; you get whatever they decide to serve that night. With great Cape Verdean music of course.

The Sahara desert extends all the way to the east side of São Vicente Island. Sand blows over the ocean and over thousands of years deposits the light-colored sand on the island. The island's typical beaches are black sand from volcanic rock.

I toured Santiago island, Cape Verde, with my pal Style (he got the name in high school because he always dressed sharp). Here he's with a mural of Amílcar Cabral, local hero, revolutionary leader and theoretician, who founded the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cabo Verde in 1956.
