Good morning #authors, what are we working on this week? I just wrapped up a big beat in my story so I’m planning the next beat / sequence & writing it this week. #writing

This weekend I hit 100k words making this officially the biggest book I’ve ever worked on, and there’s still plenty more to go! Estimated 40k to 80k words left, which seems daunting but I’ve already written more than half the book, so I know it’s doable! #writing

#PlotTober My MC has been so beaten down by so many external demands & has felt led astray by false promises in her career & marriage. She’s too risk averse to leave & believes that the world exists only to use people. The culmination of these beliefs is the entire reason why she’s on the expedition

My characters have been stuck in a forest for 40k words. I don’t want this book to be about people stuck in a forest but apparently this is the Forest of Plot™️ since so much story is happening here. I’m like: this is great & all but this is supposed to be an adventure book, let’s move it! 🤣 #writing

#PlotTober: Why does my depressed MC who has given up on finding purpose care about finding purpose? Because for the first time ever in her adult life she feels like there's a chance, even if she herself doesn't actually believe she'll find purpose in her journey, that sliver of hope is enough.

Been thinking of this one all morning: Being stuck in the "boring middle" of a first draft. Sometimes it feels like the end is so far away, but the middle must happen so I push onward! #writing

My characters have been stuck in the same place for like 20k words, I’m so ready for them to leave this place. Luckily their stay is almost done, but as an over-writer it’s going to take another 5k to 10k words to properly wrap up this section 😅 #writing

#PlotTober Before my story begins my MC lost all sense of purpose & self, forced into roles she never wanted to do. My story follows my MC as she desperately tries to find a missing woman who she believes found purpose so she can learn from her how to find her purpose. All of it is her projecting.

#PlotTober: One 1st person POV character with 2 main supporting characters & 2 main antagonizing characters. My main inspiration for my MC is the biologist from Annihilation. So she’s introspective & not happy about most things. I also decided to not name her, so she just goes by “the auditor”

I always find myself writing slower during scenes in which my characters need to make a lot of decisions. Always asking myself if this is decision takes the story where I want it to go or if this decision is something my characters really would do. Any other authors get this way? #writing

My current WIP follows an expedition to a desolate world frozen in an eternal state of decay where buildings without builders lie, strange radio towers are used for navigation & it is always overcast. The setting of this book came to me first, way before the story. It can’t happen anywhere else.

100%! The idea came to me while rereading the Southern Reach series (amazing literary inspired atmospheric horror) while listening to dark ambient music. Sometimes I’d have to stop reading because a scene for my WIP came into my mind. This book is my homage to that series. #PlotTober #writing

Was working at a stressful job at the time that I didn’t identify with. It inspired me to write a story about identity v roles & how they can clash. Took inspiration from literary books because I wanted it to be an introspective journey as well as a journey through a desolate land #PlotTober

I’m a pantser, but I outlined an important section to make sure I got the beats right. I think doing so has slowed down my #writing? Like I’m taking more time to think and figure out of the pieces fit to get the desired outcome. Any #writers out there get this way when working from an outline?

Released my second book today. Feels weird. Even though I’ve been releasing it chapter by chapter for free online for free, there’s something strange about putting it all out there at once. Although I’ve done this once before, and I’ve learned a lot over the years, I still feel imposter syndrome 😄

I used to see my day job as an obstacle in my way of my #writing, but I recently had a mental shift. After meeting so many accomplished authors at a conference who still worked a day job, I no longer see myself as an engineer who writes on the side but as a writer who so happens to have a day job.

We’re halfway through the week #writers, how’s everybody’s WIP looking? For me I’m still chugging along at my main WIP, just crossed the 85k words mark! And I’m at the formatting stage for the book I’m editing & planning on releasing in October (can’t believe October is almost already here! 😱)

Editing the book I plan on releasing in Oct & I would love to rewrite a whole sequence where my MCs pretty much go on a side quest. But it’s too late. I have a self imposed deadline I intent to uphold. I could remove it but it sets up some details that come up later. Oh well 🤷 #writing

Being a writer is having a tragic scene caused by your MC’s poor decision making come to you months out from writing it, and you’re already disappointed in your MC for making a decision you haven’t even put on the page yet. But you know you have to write it when the time comes. #writing

Honestly, one of the most motivating things I learned from the #writing conference I attended this weekend was that so many published authors work full time jobs, many of which aren’t creative writing related. It really shows the passion we #authors have for the art.

I find the hardest days to write to be the ones where it’s hard for me to make decisions. Whether it’s from my mind occupied with something else, or being too tired to make the choice. Because every word written & path taken in the story is a decision to make. #writing

When you’re tired from a busy weekend, but you don’t want to break your #writing streak, so you write a few words and your character too starts to feel how you feel.

Conventions have a strange way of warping time & reality. They might only be 3 days long but it feels like they’ve lasted weeks. You might befriend somebody, bump into them all around the corridors between events, and you feel like you’ve known them for years even though you just met them yesterday.

Just finished reading @janefriedman.com ‘s The Business of Being a Writer (2nd Edition). One of the best non-craft books on #writing I’ve read! Definitely recommend to anyone trying to expand their business or readership.

What era of writing would you say you’re in #writersofbluesky? #writing

I think I’d describe the previous era of my writing to be “write what’s fun to write.” My current era, which started with my current WIP, is solidly within a “write the book you want read” mindset now. For some authors these are one and the same, but for me I feel like they’re different. #writing

There’s this indie musician I listen to often. He hasn’t released an album since 2018 & other than the fact that his website is still up, he hasn’t been active online since 2018. Maybe nobody else listens to him anymore, but I hope he appreciates that some rando in Texas is still jamming to him 🎧

As a writer I find that setting up the chapter / part to be the hardest part. Making sure that the setting is setup well, that the initial characters & events are introduced in the best possible way. Once it’s all set up though, writing becomes a flywheel. Does anyone else get this way? #writing

#writers, do you track your daily word counts? Something else? Nothing at all? Personally, I gave up on tracking daily word counts. I did it for years and realized that it stressed me out, even if I didn't have a specific goal. Now I just track time spent on my project with Toggl. #writing #author

I decided that the best approach to handling the chaos of the weekend is to put zero pressure on writing anything “official” into my story, but to use my writing moments to write down ideas for my story, do some beat fine tuning, and to do “writing sketches” to unofficially dabble on ideas #writing

I’m currently in the middle of a personal challenge to spend 1.5hrs a day working on a creative project. Can be anything from writing, to notes, to just sitting in front of my iPad and thinking about my story. It’s been fun so far, but I did not account for juggling it with the chaos of Labor Day 😂
