Before going on partial medical leave I had individual meetings with all my in person students over the past week. I helped them come up with research projects and guided them through this process of either getting a new instructor or preparing them for the transition to online.

My substitute instructor just took over my course. I cannot express how heart breaking this is. #Asthma sucks. Heartbreaking 💔

On a personal note I am taking a partial medical level from the teaching and writing this semester. #asthma sucks. This is emotionally hard.

I’m out of the classroom with asthma. It’s bad asthma. A colleague stepped in to teach. Students had to take selfies with him and send them to me for attendance. He made a sign. Asthma sucks, but colleagues with a sense of humor are great.

Before my grandmother died I asked her how she met my grandfather. It was at a tango bar in Cordoba, Argentina in the 40s and might be the coolest family story ever! A tango bar!!!!!!

Getting an desk reject is hard. But I think it opens new doors too. I have always found that eventually an article finds the right home. I just hate having to redo all the notes for a different journal style! That is exhausting!!!!!

I was unable to attend class today because of an asthma flare up. I had the librarian step in and teach (he was amazing, BTW). I took attendance by having the students take a selfie with the librarian and email it to me. They were hilarious photos. It was a cool idea. I'm trying anyway.

Getting a rejection from a journal is ever easy, but it does get easier with time. It is just part of the process. Time to move on and think of a new outlet. I got this!

I’m on 80 msg of prednisone. For asthma. I am a hot, sweaty, hungry, insomniac, blurry vision mess. This sucks. Asthma sucks. Breathing is better though. So there’s that.

I will write an article on Substack about how we need an “archivo de terror” in the US as soon as I am recovered from this horrific asthma flare up.

Today I was informed that I win a grant at my university to travel to Argentina to start my new book project provisionally entitled Controlling the Suquia: Urban Planning, Policing, and Gender in Córdoba, Argentina in the Middle Twentieth Century. Quite excited!!!!! Whooo hoooo!

I am lucky that I get to historical research and write for a living. It is a privilege and an honor to be able to do the work I do. I hope it is there for another generation, but I worry that university is going the way of the dinosaurs.

I had a bout of psychosis postpartum, possibly brought on by heavy steroid use to treat severe asthma during pregnancy. I still need prednisone to treat my asthma now and again even though there are now biologics that help. It’s always scary when a flare up needs steroids for me. Asthma sucks.
