A photocopier is useful because it can create copies of something that was previously authored and created. There is no value in a photocopier by itself, though it is of course, a technical achievement. The real value lies on what is fed into the photocopier.

I don't talk about this often, but one of the reasons that made me become an engineer / developer in audio was some of the awful experiences I had with software as a professional.

Seeing my wife double tapping on the caps lock instead of using shift on a physical keyboard for a long while made me finally suggest her to do the "right thing". Then she remembered me that she successfully delivered a PhD thesis doing the double tap thing, and I shut up.

Been spending some time lately on Fridays to play with local AI models for audio and music. I've just ran some tests with ACE Step 1.5 (through ComfyUI, announced this week) and I'm impressed by how fast it is, and the quality is good though I can still hear artifacts in Spanish vocals.

Leveraging Opus 4.5 to help me this morning with fixing an issue and giving me ideas, it has just generated code that only works for BIG ENDIAN architectures. Thankfully I know what endianess is from my time working on PowerPC projects... and that my target platform is little endian.

One of the lessons I continue learning while running a business full-time is that I could virtually do "anything" but I can't do everything. So, having priorities and thinking at least a bit about where to spend my energy and focus is important. Asking for help when needed too. Now to make lunch :)

We had a meeting with our accountants/advisors this morning and we briefly chatted about how complex and painful to use some accounting software is. Ironically, making complex and clunky software is very easy. It takes experience and careful thought with users to design simple software solutions.

We found some time this morning to continue playing Split Fiction. Both my wife and I are amazed by how nice the game looks and sounds. I don't think that any AI model is going to be capable of producing an experience like this end to end anytime soon. And not by just prompting.

When they claim what they're doing is somehow fair, remember that not only is it theft (which is bad enough) - it supports further theft by funding pirates. We desperately need a hard reset in the AI industry. It must turn away from theft, and start paying the people whose work it relies on. /end

Just saw an "AI expert" posting on X about some technology from a startup that does Speech-To-Text and they sell it as "the end of typing". As if typing isn't going to be needed anymore and we are all going to use our voice to interact with computers. Mostly unlikely IMO.

Human beings are generally creative. And creativity is organic, so output shifts and morphs over time. Because it is organic, you can’t have 9 mothers make a baby in one month. So even if you are working on technical software, creativity and organic development are still part of the process.

For starting a small bakery and making a living out of it you don't need a PhD in quantum technologies for food nutrition. You just need to learn about bakery and perhaps get some formal training on it. Please don't do a PhD in quantum technologies for food nutrition for starting a bakery.

Once again, somebody on the internet who hasn't tried to make a living out of music or audio as a content creator is telling musicians and artists how they should do their job (with AI, of course). I hope this discourse gets old soon.

Progress on our @afectivo.bsky.social website is going really well! Been learning lots about modern web tech stack and even ventured into modifying SVGs by hand, because why not. Very excited about how nicely is everything coming along!

There is always this problem when you rely on cloud-hosted services. If you rely on a troubled service for doing your work, then you are blocked. GitHub copilot is down this morning. I guess coding assistant providers will need to add a local fallback LLM in some way to not completely block people?

I've been learning about modern web development lately for the work we are doing on our @afectivo.bsky.social website (coming up soon!) AI-assisted web development helps but I've still found some of my old HTML and JS chops helpful and useful e.g. <br> works as expected. astro.dev is fun to use.

As many early career people are starting jobs in development this month, I just wanted to remember that it's OK to make mistakes at work as long as you learn from them. I have a couple of anecdotal mistakes I made more than a decade ago that at the time I thought were going to get me fired.
