Another visit to Roundhay Park, for a report of a swan carrying a fishing hook with line attached. Our rescuer was able to successfully remove the tackle from the animal’s neck, and without lasting injury the bird was released back to the waterway a short time later.

🎃 A little early for trick-or-treating, but this swan certainly gave the residents of Thornton, East Yorkshire a surprise this evening! 🦢 The bird had taken flight in the fading light and perhaps clipping overhead telephone cables, crash landed into the residential gardens below.

Crash landed birds continue to dominate calls to our helpline, typical for the time of year when inexperienced cygnets take flight for the first time. This bird was kept safe in the garage of a Thorne resident during the week, until we arrived to assist.

Our first call out yesterday morning was to a swan on the Aire & Calder Navigation Canal, reported to be towing a fishing lure and large amount of line from her leg. The bird was swiftly caught by our rescuer, the tackle safely removed, and the bird returned to the waterway a short time later.

We attended the River Dearne one evening recently. Determined after half an hour of searching in ever fading light, we eventually found our swan in the darkness and in a very poor state, taking refuge among the reeds.

A crash landed swan required our help recently in Wakefield, after the animal had found itself in a residential garden. Thankfully, there were no injuries and the bird was immediately released to a nearby flock.

We attended Greasbrough yesterday, to a cygnet on the Dam reported to be trailing fishing line from the bird’s beak. Our volunteer was able to rescue the animal, and the fishing tackle was safely removed.

A plea for help! 📣 The last few weeks have been incredibly costly. Just now, we're facing over £2,000 in essential expenses which include veterinary medication, x-rays, blood tests, leg identity rings, feed, bedding, annual insurance and website hosting.

Despite the very wet conditions, we attended to this swan earlier today at Skelton Lake, reported to be carrying a fishing hook through the bird’s beak. The swan was rescued, the tackle safely removed, and the animal returned to the water a short time later.

The warm summer weather has certainly caused so many issues for wildlife, and this bird is a sad example.

Our apologies for the graphic image. Our rescuers recently attended this sad case at Doncaster Lakeside, where a swan and a coot were reported to be tangled together by their feet with a length of braided string, and the bigger bird pulling along the other through the water.

Another young swan, who arrived into our care a few days ago from Newark-on-Trent with an injured dropped wing. Thankfully there are no fractures, and the wing is strapped into place to take the weight off the limb whilst the bird continues her recovery in our care.

We collected this injured swan yesterday from Brigg in Lincolnshire, found with horrendous wounds and maggots that had quite literally eaten the poor animal’s wing away and into the body cavity too.

We were called to Barnsley to assist this swan recently, found carrying some fishing tackle. Thankfully, this was easily removed, and the bird could be immediately returned to their awaiting family.

After three weeks of care and treatment for a nasty dog bite to her thigh, the female swan we rescued was safely returned to Goole Marina last week. She's now reunited with her mate (pictured), who did a wonderful job of looking after their cygnets while she was in our care.

Delighted to report that we were able to return the male swan back to his grateful family at Nunroyd Park, late on Thursday. The bird was treated at our hospital for a leg infection, for which he fully recovered ahead of his release.

The first cygnet of the year to have left home and crash landed upon first flight, unfortunately for this bird onto the M62 motorway. The animal had a lucky escape, and was safely contained at this nearby warehouse. Our thanks to the staff at Torque in Castleford, for contacting us to assist.

Another swan assisted recently at Doncaster Lakeside, found with a fishing hook embedded in the bird’s leg. Thankfully, the hook was carefully removed and the bird was able to be returned to the water.

This swan was recently rescued, found covered in mud and injured, after being trampled by cattle in a field. Sadly, despite our efforts, the bird succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

A new arrival from Nottinghamshire this weekend, found with a fishing lure and tight restriction of line around one leg, which has now been removed. We continue on with treatment for this bird in our care.

On Tuesday evening, we were called to help a young swan spotted struggling in the water at Skelton Lake, tangled in fishing line wrapped around her feet.

This pair of injured swans arrived late last Friday evening from Castleford. Our thanks to the local narrowboat owners for alerting us to their injuries, and for keeping both birds from further harm until we were able to arrive. Both swans are recovering well here in our care.

Four days ago, we rescued this feisty young lady after she suffered a beak injury that caused significant blood loss. Thankfully, we were able to stop the bleeding, and the swan quickly began to recover, taking the opportunity to regain her strength & condition in our care as these photos illustrate

Another rescue call out to Rother Valley Country Park, after a breeding male swan was found unable to weight bear. A deep restriction of fishing line was found tightly around one leg, which was able to be safely removed. Our thanks to the park users for reporting the bird to us.

We were recently called to Elland Bridge to help a male swan spotted with fishing line and a float hanging from his beak. Between our rescuers arriving and successfully capturing the animal, the fishing tackle had vanished, raising fears it may have been ingested.

A swan arrival today from Thrybergh Country Park. We found the bird had an injury to her beak - perhaps the result of a poor landing - causing a chip to her upper mandible and the subsequent blood loss.

A new hedgehog arrival from North Duffield, this one was found out during the day, with a burden of fly strike and clearly struggling in the recent weather conditions. The animal has responded well, and we are now hopeful of a full recovery.

We recently assisted this cygnet at Elsecar, reported with a fishing hook and a large weight attached, causing some damage to the bird’s tongue. The bird was brought in for further treatment, and within 48 hours the tongue had healed well enough for the relieved animal to return home again.

A visit by our rescuer team to Askern today, for an adult swan reported with fishing line around her right wing, and hook attached. Thankfully, the tackle was carefully removed and the bird returned back to her grateful mate.

Cannot overstate how happy we are with the progress of this swan! Our followers may remember that the bird was rescued over the weekend from Goole Marina, with bite puncture wounds to her thigh, unable to stand and looking rather unwell.

A recent arrival, this young swan was rescued by our friends at Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue having been reported to have been bitten by a dog. The wounds have now fully healed, and the bird is making great progress in our care.

After an unsuccessful rescue attempt at 10pm, our volunteer returned to the River Wharfe at 6am the following day, to assist this bird carrying fishing tackle. The parents of the cygnet stood watchful guard, until they were reunited with their youngster a short time later.

Last night we rescued a swan from Goole Marina, reported as bloodied and unable to stand. Upon rescue and closer observation, several deep bite puncture wounds were located on the bird’s thigh, with infection already present.

Yet another call to Roundhay Park in recent days, for a swan reported carrying a fishing lure. Despite the bird being in some obvious distress and not in an immediate position of rescue, our volunteer rescuer persevered and eventually contained the animal.

Another hedgehog, in recent need of our help. This chap was found out during the day in a residential garden, and not looking too well. The animal has since received treatment for a burden of internal parasites, and is responding nicely here in our care.

This young chap was recently fetched in from Yeadon, having been observed unable to stand and separated from his family. Following treatment in our care, he’s now able to walk again and we are delighted with his progress.

A cygnet rescued from Leeds, now undergoing treatment in our care for angel wing. Should be corrected in the next two weeks with bandaging, allowing the bird the ability of full flight once fully grown.

We attended an adult swan on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, reported with fishing line around both legs and difficulty swimming. The bird was eventually located, with the lure and line safely removed. Our thanks as always to those who reported the animal to us.

Another tiny face, arriving into our care earlier today. This hoglet was found caught in some ground netting on a local allotment, but has since been cut free from the restrictions around her legs and body.

We collected this young swan from Cusworth Hall a couple of weeks ago, found unable to walk at the edge of the lake. The animal was found with a nasty leg infection, requiring two concurrent antibiotic courses, pain relief and anti-inflammatories.

Garden birds continue to arrive into our care on a very regular basis. At this time of year, they’re mostly fledglings that have commonly been predated by pet cats, and requiring attention to their wounds along with antibiotic cover.

This young swan was brought into our care last month from Thrybergh Country Park. Sadly, the animal had been caught in fishing line, which was in part wrapped tightly around the bird’s developing right wing, fracturing the limb in the cygnet’s struggle to free herself.

Our volunteer rescuers attended to a young swan on the Selby Canal yesterday evening. The animal was found with fishing line around both legs, the cause of its clear distress on the water. The line was able to be safely removed, and the bird immediately returned to her parents.
