Lost my iPhone at a con. Could now test out Apples find my device in praxis. It works really well actually. Put it in Lost mode, could enter a phone number and a message, and the phone went in power saving mode, locked itself, the apple wallet and asked for full verification when I found it.

I naturally installed some games on the two 1500 series… but I don’t really have a conclusion for the 1520D… It’s screen lets it down. There’s hardly a game you can actually play with an probably ~1s pixel response time… which leaves this one as a museum piece, but not as a usable one… 🤔

One thing that is quite fascinating about the Compaq Armada 1500 series is that they have extremely reliable batteries. Like I have three of those now, and all of them still working fine after 27 years! #retro #compaq

Found the culprit, the new Amiga 1.5mb ram extension apparently died. As soon as it’s plugged in the Amiga goes haywire…

On that topic - since I haven't found this issue documented: If your Amiga does strange things like this - bad news: Your "fat agnus" chips turned into a "bad agnus" chip. My specific variant was traded for 130€... I got a slightly newer one for "just" 80 bucks... Also check the socket...

and with a different USB mouseadapter - specifically the MouSTer adapter - I also got the "The A500 Mini THE MOUSE" to work - the mouse for the Mini A500 that was sold a few years ago. Turns out this specific mouse is a bit tricky, and the TIKUS adapter didn't wanted it. Its coming together

Welp - part 2 is a fail. Too little tolerance makes the cover not fit, the plastic is way more fragile than expected and broke while removing the support structure, and somehow the space for the screws was not deep enough and also a bit in the wrong spot. Wonder if I have enough filament left…

Here is something funny: After messing around with 4:3 aspect ratio laptops for a while, the 16:9 and even the 16:10 format looks kinda silly. We really gave up screen real estate with that wide aspect ratio…

I broke into the battery. The cells habe 0 or 0.77V. Totally toast. Unfortunately the content of another battery pack I had in storage for a while only contained 6 cells - but half thr capacity is still better than no capacity, right? It a bit sketchy, but I got it working!

New E-Waste! An Armada 1750! Batteries dead, Floppy has minor issues, and all batteries are dead, other than that, I threw in a spare 40gb HDD and it seems to work just fine! Hinges are a bit tired though.

You know, even if these Laptops are basically useless, I can’t let it win, yet. I cannot let it defeat me! So yeah, I ordered some connectors on Aliexpress, and if I am lucky, and I found fitting connectors, I take a multimeter, the adapter, and EasyEDA, and reverse engineer this drive caddy!!

If I am being honest, I think it bothers me so much because the spare parts one was in a way better condition than my original one. It was totally original, even with a working 1083mb HDD and compaq branded Windows 95 - and I ripped it apart to fix my broken sh*t box of a Laptop 😅 But it’s more use

And I am not even mentioning that the spare parts one has one of those passive matrix lcd, which have an insanely high pixel response time and are practically useless for any moving content. Kinda the predecessors to colour e-ink displays today 🤔 So overall, I did gain some parts, like intended.

Making matters worse, I also lost the qwerty keyboard due the cable having a break. Making matters even worse, I found out that the spare parts one doesn’t support the 20gb hdd from my original one. While at first thinking about building up both, it’s just not happening, the better one wins…

Well, after some more tinkering, I had to make a decision. I bought the second one for spare parts, and unfortunately that’s his destiny now. During tinkering the proprietary drive caddy of one broke. I temporarily fixed it but it broke again. (1/?)

Well - about 30years after its release - I successfully installed windows 95 - and it only took like 9 hours or so 😅 #retro #win95

After checking the PSU I also found in the box, it was time for the smoke test. Later my aunt was surprised it booted without any issue. We agreed that whatever echo the programmed died with the battery on the module… #amiga500 #amiga #retro #classipc #OSSC

The ram Extension and Realtime clock module is toast. I attempted to fix it, but it’s trenched in battery acid and that one has eaten away the traces and makes it impossible to desolder anything…

This whole idea came from the intention to watch a movie, just to find out I can rent if for 18 bucks or buy it for 24.. So I thought I for that money I could as well buy it on Blueray and am independent from the provider keeping the streaming license… But the 4k ones are really pricey 😵

@bsky.app discovery feed s a bit crooked. I got a lot of politics and political news, and after countlessly clicking on “less of this” my feed is now full of pets, which is infinitely better. But it’s still a bit one sided, are there no other topics to show?

Doesn’t matter how you do it, you lose. Pay streaming service and get charged extra for stuff you want to watch or pay a premium for local content…
