My tiny running watch screen shows interactive charts with exact values on tap. But mobile data viz feels still often as an afterthought in project convos. It's not about technical limits anymore. It's a design and esp. prioritization choice to properly create mobile data viz if needed.

Did you know that there is a simple browser dev tools setting that letβs you simulate different timezones? So testing
#dataviz
across timezones is actually quite easy. How it works & whatβs useful to test in time-based charts:

I spotted these "3D pie charts" yesterday at Futurium in Berlin. While it is a great interactive museum, these charts are pretty misleading.

Few seats left for my Data Storytelling seminar in June! Over the course of 2 days, weβll explore hands-on how to transform datasets into clear and engaging data stories. Small group (max 10), in-person in Hamburg, in German, in June.

10+ custom, interactive charts in one extensive, web-based data report. Loved coding such a variety of chart types, incl. filters, mobile optimization + multi-language support! Done for @parabole.bsky.social. β‘οΈ

Tiny change requests pile up fast. What if clients could make small updates on a coded data viz themselves? In my new post on "Beyond the Chart", I cover what to make configurable, how it adds value, and real-world examples. Read more:

Research posters donβt have to be static on paper. For the Kiel Science Communication Network, I designed and coded an interactive poster exploring their research with a network viz. Done with React, D3, GraphQL, Express, Supabase. See more here:

Recently I took a step back to reflect thoroughly on my freelance work until now. I especially love collaborating with agencies and other freelancers on creating custom, interactive data viz β¨ In the process, I redid my whole website & branding π Finally live:

Have you checked the referrers list in your website analytics recently? My Monday started with finding out that a random web agency uses my own website in their "Our Work" portfolio site β Not even automatically crawled, but with manually edited pictures and my face on it.

Great post by Michela Tjan via the Open Visualization Academy about static vs interactive charts! Fav quote: "Interactive charts didn't emerge to replace static ones; they emerged because our medium changed."

When I create interactive
#dataviz
, I first ask what screen sizes / devices / browsers / performance constraints we need to design for. Because if it's only works on my most powerful laptop, it's not production ready. So I expanded my set of testing devices. It's 2026, but real testing is still key!

I gave a guest talk at Purdue on intro to data storytelling in 'lowercase'. Writing it reminded me of when I was a student and thought only one kind of story, the Big Story, could exist. Some of this feels obvious to us in the
#dataviz
space, but maybe it isn't. Slides:

@csh.ac.at
is hosting another Complexity Science workshop in Vienna! I attended in 2024 & can highly recommend it. I met many data viz practitioners for the first time in Vienna, and I'm happy to have seen quite a few of them again at other events since.

I like these (relatively new) digital displays in some of

U-Bahn stations. A great addition would be highlighting a train when it's approaching from the previous station. That's the first thing I check. Then I know I have to take to my heels to go down the stairs to catch it.

Currently working on a personal data art project with an enormous amount of data. Started with 451 million rows in one giant CSV file. After days of juggling with DuckDB and crashing my laptop, the data engineering step finally performant enough to start with the fun visual work in p5 π€©

Finally signed up as a mentor for DVS in the upcoming cohort. I've mentored privately / informally before, so now I am curious how good the matching works. I am so focused on coding custom charts, esp D3.js. No Tableau or PowerBI questions for me please π¬
