Just a husband, father and U.S. Navy veteran in wine country trying to navigate through life...
pinned post!
June 27, 2023. The day we brought her home from the hospital after a 3 day stay. She couldn’t breathe or walk. We thought we’d lose her. They worked a miracle and got her back home. That’s our daughter hugging her while we all cried tears of joy. This has been pinned over there since that day 🐾❤️

When my good friend (and former Navy boss) Jeff retired as a full bird, he gave me some mementos. This one given to him by the team leader of SEAL Team 4 after Jeff’s ship helped them with an op. Along with Jeff’s Captain shoulder boards, they are very cherished.

Super simple (could also be called lazy) tonight: refried beans from our favorite taqueria and chicken thighs. That’s it.

The day after Bill & I had previously worked together, his 16 year old daughter was killed in a car accident. Bill and his wife were notified at 2 AM by police at their door. I saw posts tagging his wife the next day, then I read the local news, & then I knew. Oh god, no. 💔

3 years ago today when we strolled into Costco. No fake service dog vest, just the harness leash. Not a single employee objected. All the folks behind the desk at Member Services came out to pet her. We walked all around the warehouse 😂

Cleaning out the fridge and forgot that I bought these. They were still in good condition, so into a pot with butter, S&P and Lawry’s Hot Garlic Parmesan seasoning. Tasty.

Reflecting tonight. This was a few years ago while visiting PH (where her great grandfather survived on 12/7/41). This pic got me thinking about what future awaits her with this administration. She’s now a freshman in college. It’s pretty fuckin scary tbh. Pretty fuckin scary.

Watching the season finale. This would actually be a phenomenal series if they removed Billy Bob’s wife & daughter from the cast & storyline. Reference that he has an ex & daughter but never show them. I’d be fine with that. Till then it’s just a good series.

She has grown SO much one year later. She was probably 55 lbs here. Shes an even 80 now. Btw, this is her unique “Hey m’fer, I just rolled the ball to your feet. Hurry TF up!” 🤣

For all you Cowboys fans January 10, 1982 Joe told the story at Dwight’s funeral that Dwight used to tell him, “You know that no one calls it ‘the throw’, right?” 😂

I watched Free Solo last night. I am definitely not a heights person. Several times during the doc I found myself with death grips on the arms of my chair as if I was the one holding onto that rock. Incredible what he did.

Just read a thread on FB about someone looking for fresh dungeness. One commenter said the local season isn’t open yet but boats are bringing it down from OR & WA. She said it’s not the same.. It’s from the same fucking Pacific Ocean. Yes, it’s the fucking same 🙄

Sunrise & sunset in the middle of nowhere on a Navy ship is magical. I wasn’t a huge fan of the 2-7 AM navigation watch, except for this moment right here. Worth the lack of sleep.

Bloody Mary Hanger steak. From the butcher shop I used to work at. Top butcher shop in the county, by far. That might also include Marin county as well

White beans, shredded chicken thigh meat, chorizo, garlic, shiitake & portobello mushrooms & chicken stock. Zero seasoning added. The components took care of that. Delicious!

From my friend Tim. He’s an Academy grad and retired full bird. I met him at my old LT Jeff’s retirement. Ironically I met Tim for the first time at Navy Yard where the shooting took place. He and Jeff were still active duty & working together.

Our daughter and her boyfriend at our dinner last night. He’s a good kid. Smart, treats her right. About all a dad can ask. He also knows what her uncle did for 28 years, so there’s zero chance of him messing this up 😉

We asked our Coastie neighbors if they could pop in and let Sava out while we’re taking Jackie back to school. To them that meant popping in 4 times, two long walks, playing with her, watching tv with her, etc. I’ll say it again: they are amazing people⚓️❤️

I’ve made a lot of different soups over the years. But this one still stands out as my favorite. I’ll be making more this week: Leftover shredded turkey, chorizo, crimini shrooms, baby kale, slivered garlic and white beans. Should pair well with some warm sourdough

Navy brother turned winemaker is here for a visit. He has two labels based out of Paso. On this label the ship we served together on is on the right, his first ship on the left. I introduced him to wine when we were Navy roommates. Now he’s a winemaker with two labels of his own ⚓️❤️

I never use the term “the greatest” or “the best” when it comes to food. I’ll simply say this is the greatest ice cream I’ve ever had. Pilar made a special batch for me. This is the last pint. I’m savoring it.

Turkey, potato, crispy bacon & prosciutto, one diced jalapeno, chicken stock, paprika, cumin and S&P. I made a roux, so it’s more of a NE clam chowder consistency and less like a run of the mill soup. Incredible flavor!

My daughter made me laugh. She spent last night with her best friend & her family, plus another family out at their place in Bodega Bay. She said the dads roasted a whole NY, but couldn’t figure out how to make the gravy. She told them “Do you want me to call my dad to tell you how??” 😂😂😂

While regular Pam works fairly well, this stuff is like magic. I roasted some unseasoned chx thighs for Sava last week. My wife had this out for her baking, so I figured why not. Took the cooked thighs out of the pan, drained the liquid and rinsed with hot water. Nothing stuck.
