You don't even need to custom build one. For the longest time I ran a Synology box with 2 drives. You'll get better bang for your buck if you build your own but it's really not needed with all the cheaper (than Synology) options nowadays.

Some people may think having your own NAS is dumb but this bad boy (Andromeda) houses all my downloads from 2016+, backups for both my macs AND my Windows desktop.
