Last week six of our team were invited to the inaugural meeting of the Wales and the West Forensic Network (WWFN). The regional network aims to create a sustainable, responsive, and resilient system to foster research excellence, and operational effectiveness in #ForensicScience.

This summer we had the pleasure of hosting a Forensic Science Research Summer School for Students from Texas A&M University Department of Entomology and Professors Adrienne Brundage and Aaron Tarone. All helmed by our own Professor Tasnim Munshi.

Last week we loaned out Dr Chris Aris, Lecturer in Forensic Anthropology here at #KeeleUniversity, to Durham's Department of Anthropology for a couple of days to be External Examiner on a PhD Viva.

Last week our PhD student Catherine Roberts was at the #FASE2025 Symposium in Paris, presenting to the Forensic Anthropology Society of Europe. Catherine's talk was on her work on dental diagenesis at early post-mortem intervals, and how this can help #forensicscience and #forensicanthropology.

Last week we had the pleasure of having Hebe Unwin, Lecturer and Social Media Lead for Plymouth Marjon University's Forensic Team visit us. Hebe was generous enough to give a #careers and #research talk to our undergraduate and postgraduates in #ForensicScience.

Last week we were delighted to be able to welcome Staffordshire Fire and Rescue (www.staffordshirefire.gov.uk) to campus, and facilitate them being able to conduct a radiation response drill in one of #chemistry labs.

One of our international #research collaborations is with Manx National Heritage. Within the ‘From the Mouths of Manx Mothers’ project led by Dr Marie Weale, Dr Chris Aris has been collaborating by conducting histological and micro-CT imaging and analysis on remains from the Isle of Man.

Interdisplinary approaches are a part of how we #teach and do #research at Keele Forensics, including what we encourage and facilitate for our students' own research. A recent example is Michael Gameson's work on developing a method for detecting joint replacements in the field. #ForensicScience

This weekend was our latest #OpenDay! We welcomed new prospective students and those who have reached out to us through #clearing. Was great to meet you all and show you around our #teaching and #research labs, #ForensicScience Simulation Centre, and our beautiful campus at #KeeleUniversity!

New #facilities and #equipment updates!🔬🦠🦴 In one of our #ForensicAnthropology labs we have recently created a dedicated microscopy space. This will be used to support bone, tooth, and materials #research, as well as being used in #teaching on our #ForensicBiology modules...

At #KeeleUniversity we approach #ForensicScience from an interdisplinary and collaborative approach. For example, some recent student #research combined #ForensicBiology and #ForensicChemistry to look into the impact of temperature and oil levels on decomposition.

Yesterday we have our annual Staff Training Day!🏫 Each year we schedule a day for each of our expert teams to give bespoke sessions to the rest of our team. This allows us to all contribute across all aspects of #ForensicScience both in regard to #Teaching and #Research.

This week we have had our annual #WorkExperience week. Organised by our School's outreach leads, Becky Walton ( #forensics), Chloe Davis ( #chemistry), and Nila Balakrishnan ( #physics), this year we have had 18 students from various schools and colleges come and work with us at #KeeleUniversity.

As we celebrate those students graduating from Keele, we don't want to forget about those still with us, especially our Postgraduate Researchers who keep going throughout the summer, conducting cutting edge novel research in #Forensics!

Yesterday was our summer graduation for all our graduates of 2025. This included seeing a huge number of both undergraduate and postgraduate students across all our #ForensicScience programmes formally be awarded their degrees - we couldn't be more proud of all of them!

Big post coming tomorrow, but a quick sappy one to say a huge congratulations to all our #2025graduates, we're all so unbelievably proud of you and hope you had an amazing day! Was absolutely incredible to see so many of you and meet all your families. We hoped you all celebrated to the fullest!

As a part of continuing to expand our exiting #ForensicAnthropology modules and research, and developing new content in #WildlifeForensics, #ForensicBiology, and #ForensicMedicine we have been developing our comparative anatomy collection - with a focus on UK wildlife and predatory species.

We're absolutely thrilled to say that we have been ranked in the Top 10 in England for #forensicscience in the 2025 National Student Survey! Massive congratulations to our school-mates who have ranked No.1 in the UK for Chemistry and in the Top 10 in England for Physics! 🎉

Can you tell its the summer conference season? Dr Falko Drijfhout has be back away, this time in Evora, Portugal, at the annual meeting for E-NICHE Cost Action, where he was one of 35 representatives from across Europe, representing the UK, in the management committee of this COST Action.

With the return of warm weather we start prepping the fieldwork exercises we run throughout the year. This year we pioneered new fieldwork for our #ForensicScience students where they conduct group-led problem solving activity using #UAV and #GPR as a part of our Wildlife Forensics module.

Its been all about outreach here recently! Last week Prof Charlene Greenwood and Lecturer in Crime Scene Examination Clare Smith attended Barnfields Primary School in Stafford for a career fayre, where they spoke all about their work and the skills needed to be a #ForensicScientist.

Last week we had our End-of-Year Ball to celebrate all our #ForensicScience students' hard work throughout the year - organised by the Keele Forensics Society and their president Oak Bishop. This year the ball was Alice in Wonderland themed. It was great to see everyone’s amazing outfits!

Cora Cisan, postgraduate researcher in #ForsenicAnthropology, is conducting their #research at #KeeleUniversity on histopathology of bone using complex imaging methods. This includes using filters on thin sections to help ID disease markers...which happens to be very on brand for #PrideMonth!

Our Dr Falko Drijfhout, is an expert in #ForensicEntomology and the chemical analysis of blowfly specimens. He is also a board member of the European Association for Forensic Entomology (EAFE) and is currently attending the annual conference #EAFE2025 in Parma, Italy this year.

This past week our final year undergraduate and masters students completed their court assessments within our dedicated campus courtroom. They have worked all year gathering evidence and creating expert witness reports to present as one of their final assessments. #ForensicScience #Teaching

Last week we were delighted to welcome PC Rich Briggs, a Drugs Expert Witness and Controlled Drugs Liaison Officer from Cheshire Police, to #KeeleUniversity to present to our #ForensicScience students as part of Drugs of Abuse module. #Teaching

Our #ForensicScience students on our second-year Drugs of Abuse module visited our #CrimeScene facilities to view our cannabis farm scene simulations and learn how to use the 360 camera to capture 360° pictures of crime scenes. #Forensics #CSI #KeeleUniversity

‼️PUBLICATION ALERT‼️ Huge congrats to alumnus Saskia Caddell who's masters research has been published in Nantwich Museum Journal 2025. With Drs Chris Aris and Amber Collings, Saskia worked on developing methods to identify if cremated remains were human and then produce biological profiles.

Sometimes #forensics is about looking at rocks...or specifically at #KeeleUniveristy, the application of quantitative textural analysis to the geo-forensic discrimination of different lithological trace evidence. In essence our students learn how to ID sediments' own fingerprints!

As a part of our #forensicscience programs at #KeeleUniversity we invite our graduates back to give #careers talks. Most recently Katrina Wells and Carys Tune, came to talk to the students about their chosen careers, and how their time at Keele prepared them for the workplace.

Before Easter, Dr, Natalie Capel led our students through presumptive tests on drug samples, combining them with IR & NMR spectroscopy to identify the unknowns. Continuing onto their criminal investigation scenario, utilising the same techniques on mock forensic evidence samples. #forensicscience

This year we've introduced some new practicals in our level 5 Digital Forensics module. The students get to explore our Simulation Centre, dealing with digital evidence at the scene and back in the lab, explore taking apart computers. #forensicscience #keeleuniversity #digitalforensics #teaching

Something must be right when your students are dragging 40kg mannequins through the woods to comments of “oh, it’s just forensics”! This might look sus, but ever ones to #innovate, Drs Chris Aris and Viv Heaton are actually teaching our #ForensicScience students about #ForensicBotany fieldwork.

Last week we had our 2025 #ForensicScience Student #Research Conference, where our students are present a poster, which we print at A1 for them, as a part of the Research Project module. Hosted over 3 days at #KeeleUniversity its a great annual event to see all their hard work on show!

This week our #ForensicScience masters students got to test their skills with a mass grave excavation! Led by Dr’s Heaton and Wisniewski, they spent 2 days in the field, using GP-radar and drones to locate the grave, which they then documented and excavated using forensic archaeological techniques.

As we near the conclusion of our 2025 #ForensicScience Student #Research Conference this week, here's another highlight of what our students have been up to: Ellie has been looking at whether different water environments effect the enhancement of fingerprints on non-porous surfaces.

In the continued lead up to our annual #ForensicScience Student #Research project here is some more amazing stuff from our students: Dawid has been working on 3D Modelling and Ballistics – using 3D scanning and printing technology to create ballistic evidence and training resources.

Over the weekend we welcomed a group of our offer holders back to campus for an Applicant Visit Day! With a large number of our team there, our #ForensicScience applicants were able to experience #CSI in our specialist simulation centre, and #Fingerprinting in our state of the art lab facilities.
