The Avant Music Guide to Big Ears 2026
Big Ears Festival returns to downtown Knoxville for four days of concerts, conversations, films, and installations across more than 20 venues. Over 250 events make scheduling an act of triage, and plenty of excellent shows will unavoidably conflict with each other. What follows is one possible path through the festival with (mostly) non-overlapping picks for each day, and the acknowledgment that some excellent acts will be omitted.

New Releases from International Anthem: McCraven, Uhlmann, Johnson / Kohl / Stewart, and Alabaster DePlume
Four new and recent releases from Chicago's International Anthem label span reissue, debut, and EP formats, spanning instrumental jazz, avant-garde string trio, and politically engaged improvisation. Makaya McCraven – Universal Beings (IA11 Edition) (2xLP/digital, International Anthem). It's a four-sided communal showcase of the inter-city exchange that had started to develop in the "new jazz" hubs, collecting group improvisations from New York, London, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

Source: Bandcamp Daily. The Association for the Advancement of Creative Music has been fortifying the careers of unconventional musical minds since its founding in Chicago on May 8, 1965. For all the AACM’s organizational might, its first rule is that art has no rules. “Everybody had different concepts,” recalls Threadgill of the group’s beginnings. “It was about artistic freedom, without any kind of rules or any kind of guidelines. Each one of us had to write, interpret, and create a world of music however we had dreamed it or thought of it.”

AMN Reviews: Haedrons – Palimpseste (2026; Bandcamp)
Haedrons is a guitar / drums duo, with a guest saxophonist on one track of this EP. Their sound operates within a progressive rock framework, though instrumental and heavy, bordering on metal and post rock at times. Josh Vincent sets forth complex riffs and arpeggiated chords, while Jeff Gonzalez provides correspondingly involved rhythmic patterns. The feel is largely upbeat, even if Vincent and Gonzales characterize their effort as a "construct of sonic anxiety." …

AMN Reviews: Brooddark – Deliro (2026; Winter-Light)
Brooddark (Yaroslav Gavrilyuk) is on a roll. After two strong releases in 2025, he returns in early 2026 for another dark and isolationist ambient offering. Deliro is an album that appears austere and abstract at first, but this initial impression belies a sophisticated and structured compositional approach. These 10 soundscapes juxtapose lilting electronics with dense, almost suffocating, walls of sound. The title track veers toward the latter with roughly-textured synth and processing settling forth ominous melodic structures.

The Quietus reviews Music for Intersecting Planes by Leila Bordreuil and Kali Malone (Ideologic Organ), a candlelit collaboration for cello, feedback, organ, and sine waves recorded live in a Swiss chapel. Nate Chinen writes for The Gig on Tyshawn Sorey's Monochromatic Light (Afterlife) (DACAMERA Editions), drawing on conversations with Sorey and time spent at rehearsals to examine a work that bridges Rothko, Feldman, and Sorey's own expansive conception of grief and history.

AMN Reviews: TROUM – EmphasYs (2026; Cyclic Law & Transgredient Records)
German experimental ambient duo TROUM, active since the 1990s, return with EmphasYs. The album's seven drone-oriented tracks result from an unconventional process in which each is structured around a single focal instrument. Nonetheless, the album maintains a unifying sound and feel. These instruments are electric guitar, cello, accordion, didgeridoo, acoustic guitar, zither, and saxophone. They are used to generate texture and atmosphere rather than melody and harmony.

Peter Jones on Acousmatic Crossings
"Nature After the Microphone": Peter Jones on Sound, Ecology, and the Impossibility of Capturing Nature Australian sound artist Peter Jones has a new piece — Hibernatorium (2024) — featured in the latest installment of Metapsychosis journal's ongoing Acousmatic Crossings series, alongside an essay by curator Michael Eisenberg that frames the work philosophically. Hibernatorium was developed as an interactive octophonic sound installation using cubic speaker placement. The sounds were collected in response to the life of a local creature, the Gippsland Water Dragon which was a focus of our group’s creations.

Joan La Barbara Interview
Source: Echoes Podcast. In the Echoes Podcast we have avant-garde icon Joan La Barbara. I have avant-garde vocal icon Joan La Barbara, who, along with Meredith Monk, change the way a voice could sound in music, opening up a world of deeper expressions. We play a lot of singers on this show who create imaginary languages. Vocalists like Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins, Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance and Azam Ali of Vas and Niyaz.

Éliane Radigue Profiled
Source: The Wire. Radigue began composing in the 1950s. From a non musical family, she attracted the attention of a local music teacher who gave her piano lessons as a child. She later learnt harp at Nice conservatory, always interested in the slow adagio movements of the classical repertoire. The French sculptor Arman and teenage Radigue fell in love, and they had their first child in 1951.
