Four years ago, I put a tripod and 600mm telephoto lens on my back and scrambled up Mount Erickson, near the Alberta-B.C. border, so I could get a clear view of what an open-pit coal mine looks like. It was for a feature story on Alberta's plan to open up the Rocky Mountains to mining like this:
