This work has led to the establishment of the DAFM and NPWS funded Ancient Woodlands Ireland project which seeks to complete a national inventory of ancient woodlands for Ireland. More info here - ancientwoodlandsireland.com

A case study of Leitrim and Kilkenny used 1830s OS maps & older archival information to identify 120 ancient woodlands, far more sites than previously documented. Many small fragments of ancient woodland in the Irish landscape, but most are threatened & lacking protection. @maynoothuni.bsky.social
