My reference library which I have built up for nearly 30 years. It aids me with research and includes books on art history, architecture, sculpture, history, esoterica and European and Asian ceramics. It’s my own little piece of paradise.

A lovely #Meissen saucer, circa 1735, with a landscape scene painted in puce within two concentric puce circles. On the base, a yellow ground with Meissen crossed swords and gilder’s letter Z.

Great to see Chris Elliot at @SoaneMuseum today for a catch up chat. Chris will be co-curating the upcoming ‘Egypt: Influencing British Design 1775 - 2025’ exhibition at the Soane. I remember him curating the brilliant ‘Egypt in London’ exhibition at Wellington Arch in 2012.

Two #Sphinx in the snow at Chiswick House Gardens. They were sculpted by Giovanni Battista Guelphi from a Roman sphinx purchased by Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel. Several metal versions were cast by John Cheere. Today the sphinx is at the Ashmolean Museum. Photo 1 by Ricky Pound, 2005.

Pleased to discover that Mayer’s book ‘The Ruins of Rome- A Cultural History’ has a chapter dedicated to ‘Remembering the Grand Tour Paintings, Models and Other Souvenirs’ & that this chapter makes reference to models collected by Sir John Soane that are located at his museum at Lincoln’s Inn Fields

The Picture Room at Sir John Soane’s Museum is a Russian doll’s box of tricks. The paintings are on hinged panels which open to reveal further paintings behind. This is a genius idea which saves space & allows further art works to be seen. An awe inspiring space & one of my favourite interiors!

I’m looking forward to revisiting the world of Randall Flagg…..

I think one of the reasons that Giovanni Battista Belzoni marked the Egyptian tombs he found with graffiti stating his name was because of Henry Salt claiming false credit for Belzoni’s discoveries. It’s little wonder the Italian strongman was peeved off with this particular British consular.

3 sizes of Wedgwood ‘Harebell and Acanthus' spill vases. Also with garlands of flowers hanging from ram's head masks (bucrane) and borders of scrolls and flowers. The combination of bucrane and swags harks back to the sacrificial symbolism found on classical architecture and art.
