SH3 - The newspaper on top of the subway ticket machines that Heather can read is titled New York Journal. The subway level is heavily based on the subway scene from Jacob's Ladder, which is set in New York.

SH4 - The Nahkeehona are a pair of mysterious rocks in the Silent Hill woods that the Holy Mother faction of the cult worships, a tradition carried over from the original natives of the area. Joseph Schreiber found his sword of obedience in one of these rocks during his confinement.

SHD - An earlier design of officer Sewell depicted him with a mustache and a rougher appearance. While it was scrapped in favor of a cleaner look, the design is still used in-game for a recurring extra at Ryall State Prison, even appearing alongside Sewell in one scene.

SH1 - The steel pipe was originally going to be located at the northeast corner of the map, under the collapsed overpass, which made it very obscure to find. It was moved to the alley from the opening in the retail version, but strategy guides still refer to the old placement.

In 2006, Climax Studios pitched a new Silent Hill game to Konami, now known as Broken Covenant (from a later attempt). It featured Father Hector Santos in an Arizona town, where SH's influence has spread. Both towns start merging and buildings from SH's history materialize everywhere.

In a genius move to convey to the player that Kaufmann is an American doctor before mentioning it in dialog, the developers decided to have him introduce himself by shooting his patient with a skin condition several times in the examination room without getting off his chair.

SM - The depiction of Nowhere seen in this game took inspiration from Mark Z. Danielewski's book House of Leaves, in which the interior of a house expands into a seemingly infinite, impossible space.

SH1 - Harry and Cheryl's original names were Humbert and Dolores Mason, as a play on Humbert and Dolores from Lolita (specifically, Kubrick's adaptation). This was quickly recognized as a bad move, so they were renamed to Harrold (after Harry Inaba, game localizer) and Cheryl (after Sheryl Lee).

SH2 - Before South Vale became what it is today, it used to be mostly a swamp connected to the lake. Prison executioners would pour bloody water used to wash their tools into it, so there's plenty of rumors about ghosts in the district. The swamp was filled in with land later, and became South Vale.

HC - A strange room appears in the hospital Otherworld's 2F map, while it doesn't exist in the regular world. It serves no purpose, as it's locked. It doesn't have any counterpart in SH1 or Origins either. If it existed, it'd have to be very large and it'd be visible from the street.

SH4 - There is a very low chance that in the radio in Room 302 there will be a joke broadcast about the game's director, Suguru Murakoshi, getting arrested for public indecency.

SH0 - In the walkway outside Riverside Motel's Room 316 (room with the wedding outfits and cake inside), the player can hear footsteps walking and running around the floor below.

SH3 - Although it's almost impossible to see, Douglas' dead model from the Possessed ending has dilated pupils, a characteristic seen in recently dead bodies. The rest of his models use more constricted pupils for his eyes, so this was a conscious choice.

SHf - Because Hinako updates her map as she goes along, there's a humorous (possibly unintentional) instance where, after meeting Sakuko and getting called a traitor at the start of the game, she immediately writes down on the map that Sakuko owes her 500 yen.

SHTF - The writing "Whatever heart this town had has stopped" was originally hidden in the audio of the 2022 teaser trailer for Townfall, and was revealed when fans ran the trailer through a spectrogram.

SH4 - Henry gradually forgets details and becomes unsure of his activities in the apartment as the game goes on. In this example, he first forgets why he was cutting scraps from magazines, then forgets what magazines he was working with, and finally forgets doing it altogether.

SH3 - Vincent's eyes are mismatched. His left eye has a noticeably larger pupil than the right eye, and they look in different directions.

A look at Pyramid Head's various Great Knives throughout the series. In SH2, the edge of the blade is continuous with the handle. It was designed with the intention of being one half of a pair of scissors, as can be seen in the axis at the end of the handle.

SHD - One of the sidequests involves Murphy going into an empty movie theater, where he can enter three "films" that he proceeds to assemble into one long reel. The product is loose scenes in locations already seen in cutscenes with no context, and ends when Murphy gets a gun from the attic.

SH3 - A document in the church mentions that drawing the Halo of the Sun in blue is a curse on God and is forbidden. A blue Halo of the Sun doesn't properly appear ever in the franchise, but there is one in a similar hue painted above the door that leads to the mall's 3F atrium.

Because of the various inspirations behind the town, Silent Hill is a geographical mix based on Illinois (Paleville), California (South Vale), the Czech countryside and the Pacific northwest (Pleasant River) and the Japanese towns of Towadako and Tazawako (lakeside town idea).

SH0 - Remnants and Ariels are the only enemies in the game that are restricted to their introductory level. All other enemies make appearances in multiple levels or return for the Otherworld streets segment at the end.

HC - Some Homecoming maps have problems with cardinal directions. The "North" and "South" family crypts at Rose Heights directly contradict the "East" and "West" gardens, and the Church of the Holy Way's wings are labelled "west" and "east", despite actually being north and south in the outside.

SH4 - The outline of the sealed storeroom of Room 302 can be faintly seen in Joseph's prologue at the end of the hallway.

SHD - Queen Burger was a Burger King parody place in Old Silent Hill that was only seen in Silent Hill 1, with no other locations in the games. Downpour brought it back with a new location in Chastain Heights, across from the Shadow Play sidequest apartment.

SH3 - In some occasions, after killing all enemies in the Church meeting room, the blood corruption will dissipate into circle patterns that expand until disappearing.

I'm back from seeing my favorite band, so I didn't have a Halloween post. So for something different-ish, what are some odd misconceptions you've seen shared about the franchise? Preferably no Pyramid Head stuff (way too much). Weird stuff that makes you think "did we even play the same thing?"

SH1 - Rompers' faces are split down the middle vertically. This is more visible in their official art, but their in-game model shows it too.

SH2 - Pyramid Head's helmet opens a handful of times in the game. He pries it open in the closet scene, then it slides open while strangling James (first boss fight) and when killing Maria (both times). He finally pries it open when he kills himself at the end of the game, and stays like that, dead.

SH3 - The save point in Brookhaven Hospital's 3F storeroom is drawn over a blank version of the US Constitution.
