The real question nobody in this article asks: What happens when companies that mass-fired discover AI doesn’t work without the people they fired? That correction is coming. It will be expensive, embarrassing, and fast.

The article gives Steve Bannon two pages as a serious AI policy thinker. This is the man who helped install the people who are currently preventing AI regulation. Giving him a platform for “we need regulation” is journalistic amnesia.

The historical analogies in the article (ATMs, Excel, electrification) all prove the OPPOSITE of what the doom narrative suggests. Each time: the tool made skilled humans more valuable, not less. The job changed. The expertise became more critical, not obsolete.

Tyrangiel writes that “American capitalism rushes toward efficiency the way water flows downhill.” But what’s happening isn’t efficiency. It’s a massive misallocation driven by executives who think “AI replaces workers” because that’s what the vendor slide deck says.

Wall Street wants CEOs to cut headcount. CEOs comply because they’ll lose their own jobs if they don’t. Nobody in this chain actually understands the technology. The article frames this as “capital vs. labor.” It’s actually “panic vs. comprehension.”

The real power shift the article misses entirely: Before AI: 5 mediocre developers, all replaceable After AI: 1-2 people who understand the system AND the tools Those 1-2 people can leave anytime. And they know it. The means of production become individual.

A junior lawyer doing 4 years of document review isn’t wasting time. They’re building the judgment that lets them know when the AI’s output is wrong. Skip that pipeline and you get senior partners who can’t evaluate what Claude gives them. That’s not efficiency. That’s institutional brain damage.

The article quotes Dario Amodei saying AI could “wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs.” Think about what that means structurally: You eliminate the pipeline that creates the senior experts who know how to USE AI productively.

In 18 months, when the automated system starts producing garbage, nobody internal will know why. They’ll hire consultants. Those consultants will be the same people they fired — now charging 5x the rate. The expertise doesn’t vanish. It gets repriced.

Here’s what actually happens when companies mass-fire and “automate”: They don’t fire the people who fill out forms. They fire the expertise that understood WHICH forms matter, WHEN the system fails, and WHY the edge cases exist.

AI is a force multiplier, not a replacement. An experienced accountant with Claude is 5x more productive. Claude without the accountant hallucinates numbers, misses edge cases, produces plausible-sounding nonsense. The tool multiplies competence. It doesn’t generate it.

The entire article accepts CEO claims (“AI will eliminate 50% of white-collar jobs”) as ground truth and then asks: who will save the workers? But what if the CEOs are just… wrong? What if they don’t understand what their own tool does?
