Dave Roberts said today he could be willing to push Shohei Ohtani beyond five innings tonight and into the postseason. That’s a byproduct of several conversations on how Ohtani has been feeling during his build up.

Will Smith is still wearing a splint on his broken hand. Said the hope is still that he gets to a place where he’s ready to go for next Tuesday’s start to the postseason, but it’ll be up to his pain tolerance on when he can start to ramp up baseball activities.

In additional news, Andrew Friedman said it’s unlikely Brusdar Graterol makes it back this season. Things haven’t progressed enough for him to start ramping up after offseason shoulder surgery.

Shohei Ohtani’s next pitching start will be Tuesday in Arizona. A week from that would be Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series. Their rotation for that isn’t set in stone, but can piece some things together there.

Ben Rortvedt will receive “the lion’s share” of starts behind the plate in Smith’s absence.

Dave Roberts said “I still feel there is a role for him, a spot for him” when asked if Clayton Kershaw is a candidate for the postseason roster, which he admitted is not finalized yet.

Freddie Freeman said Clayton Kershaw told him of his plans to retire about a month ago and was sworn to secrecy. Joked that he was surprised that Kershaw even announced the news at all rather than go out quietly.

Dave Roberts sounded pleasantly surprised when told Sasaki's velocity ticked up the way it did. "Obviously with the rehab assignment we're sort of up against it now so we've got to make a decision and figure out where we're at."

Roki Sasaki's night is done after 4.2 IP and 90 pitches. His command and velocity backed up on him a bit in the fifth inning, but still averaged 98.5 mph with his fastball on the night, trying out a new cutter (labeled as sliders) and using the PitchCom to call his own pitches.
