The Bride! (2026): A lonely monster resurrects a murdered woman with the help of a doctor. The couple then go on something of a rampage. A mad hybrid of genres with two great leads. Bizarrely includes an awesome dance sequence. Excellent film.

Grindhouse (2007): A double bill of 70s inspired horrors as well as a bunch of fake trailers. Death Proof is much the better film, with an insane car chase, but Planet Terror is a lot of fun. The fake trailers are brilliant, particularly the Rob Zombie one. A fantastic concept.

The Mummy (1999): An American chap in Egypt is recruited by an English woman and her brother to find a lost tomb. They end up waking up a right bastard of a mummy. Daft but it’s a pretty good blockbuster with effects that have mostly held up well. Entertaining stuff.

Skyline (2010): Some folk having a party in an apartment witness an alien invasion that ravages LA. Well designed aliens and effects that hold up remarkably well given its budget. Has quite an unusual ending, both in tone and style. Has its detractors but I like it.

My Bloody Valentine (2009): A miner goes on a horrific rampage on Valentines Day. Ten years later, a survivor returns to town and the killing starts again. A good remake that ups the violence considerably. Has a sense of fun and a pretty decent cast.

My Bloody Valentine (1981): Years after a miner carried out a rampage on Valentines Day, a town is plagued by a similar outbreak of violence when warnings not to celebrate are ignored. A good slasher with a memorable masked killer and an intriguing mystery at the centre.

Friday the 13th (2009): Years after seeing his murderous mother beheaded, a big bloke living on an abandoned summer camp kills a new bunch of young people. Apart from an incredibly unpleasant character and an overall lack of sense, this is a decent remake. Violent and humorless.

Friday the 13th (1980): Years after some counselors were murdered at a summer camp, an attempt to reopen it is thwarted by a new set of kids being picked off by a killer. Derivative but well done, with likeable characters, inventive kills and a good sense of mystery. Top slasher.

At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul (1964): An undertaker who bullies the local folk starts killing people to get his hands on a woman he fancies. This results in him being cursed. A memorable antagonist in Coffin Joe and a distinctive style make for a crazy fun film. Great stuff.

Titane (2021): A model who is also a serial killer is impregnated by a car. To evade the law, she pretends to be the missing son of a fireman, who looks after her. Underneath all the strangeness, this is a beautiful film, both visually and thematically. An absolute one off.

Tomie (1998): A young woman who lost her memory in an incident 3 years prior is linked to a female demon able to resurrect herself. Very much a slow burn even for a Japanese horror, and relies on mystery more than shock, so slightly different to other J horrors. Pretty good film.

The Road (2009): A father and son make their way through a post apocalyptic America looking for food and trying to survive. Incredibly bleak and genuinely horrifying, although has a slightly hopeful ending. Mortensen is excellent as always. Hardly enjoyable but great film.

Offspring (2009): A bunch of people are attacked by a group of cannibals. A retired lawman has been trying to find the clan for years. Incredibly brutal which is hardly surprising given the subject matter. Doesn’t pull many punches either with a few shocking deaths.

The Dungeonmaster (1984): A bloke with a strange connection to his computer is abducted by a demon who sets the man challenges to overcome using his fancy technology. Some good ideas hidden in a mess of a film, more of a portmanteau from various directors. Strangely endearing.

The Shadow of the Cat (1961): A woman is murdered by her servant at the request of her husband. Her cat who witnesses the crime seeks vengeance. Poe inspired and a lot of fun, especially the cat’s eye vision. A lot of awful bastards get taken out by a little cat.

Captain Clegg (1962): A village plagued by spectral horsemen is investigated by agents of the king over suspected links to smuggling. Quite an odd film with a great turn by Cushing as always. Also features a young Oliver Reed in a supporting role.

The Phantom of the Opera (1962): A chap with hideous scars takes a fancy to an opera singer and seeks revenge against a composer that stole his work. A bit of a tired retelling of the story that could have done with more of the actual phantom. Gough is good as the villain though.

Nightmare (1964): A young girl suffering from PTSD after seeing her mother kill someone years ago is sent home from boarding school to recuperate. Things get worse. Psychological horror that’s a bit derivative but has a cracking ending. Pretty decent.

The Mist (2007): After a huge storm, small town folk in a store are trapped by a strange mist that is filled with vicious creatures. More about how people react to a crisis than about monsters, but absolutely top drawer horror all round. One of the greatest endings of all time.

Triangle (2009): Folk on a sailing trip get caught in a storm and seek refuge on a passing cruise ship. The ship is mostly empty and they’re killed off. Repeatedly. A time loop film that’s pretty well constructed, and I’m guessing rewards repeat viewing. Incredibly enigmatic.

30 Days of Night (2007): A town in Alaska about to experience a period without sunshine is attacked by a gang of vampires. Great concept and some of the most sadistic vampires in film. Some of the characters are a bit forgettable but largely very good. And pretty damn violent.

[Rec] (2007): A film crew following firemen around end up trapped in an apartment building along with a dangerous old woman. Excellent use of the found footage style, with a few big scares and an escalating sense of dread and paranoia. Goes in a weird direction too.

Apartment 7A (2024): An aspiring dancer is helped out by an old couple who let her live in their spare apartment. Unfortunately they’re satanists. A largely unnecessary prequel to Rosemary’s Baby, although it is well made and Julia Garner is extraordinary. The ending is good.

The Racetrack Murders (1964): A successful race horse and the family that own it are targeted by various criminals, with a bunch of folk being murdered. Relatively complicated even for a krimi, and the actual killer is a bit of a surprise. Entertaining stuff though.

Silent Hill (2006): A woman takes her adopted daughter to an abandoned town that the daughter keeps dreaming about. Big mistake that. Some questionable dialogue and acting but looks absolutely fantastic due to some outstanding practical effects. Genuinely creepy at times. Decent.

The Monster of London City (1964): Someone is murdering prostitutes whilst a play about Jack the Ripper is on in town. The lead actor becomes a suspect. Quite a few killings for a krimi and a number of likely suspects. Has a silly subplot that seems to be there to fill the time.

The Hills Have Eyes (2006): A family traveling through the desert are set upon by a group of mutated cannibalistic locals. A very good remake, with a great cast and some no holds barred brutality. Nasty and nihilistic but certainly well made and respectful of the original.

Ready or Not (2019): On her wedding night, a woman is introduced to a family tradition of a wealthy family wherein they play a game. It’s hide and seek and they attempt to hunt and kill her. Unhinged and brilliant, with some wonderfully dark humour and excellent set pieces.

Him (2025): A promising (American) football player is invited to a training camp hosted by a legend of the game after suffering an injury. Shit gets seriously weird. Visually stunning and with Wayans best performance of his career. Very trippy sports horror hybrid. Excellent.

The Damned (1962): An American chap and a girl running from the girl’s teddy boy brother end up meeting a bunch of children who are part of a government experiment. Bizarre mash up of genres that must have been quite dark at the time it was made. Still is now in fact. Weird as fuck.

The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958): Having successfully faked his own execution, Frankenstein sets up shop under a pretty flimsy alias and starts making a person again. Not bad but doesn’t really advance the story any further than its predecessor, having basically the same plot.

The Two Faces of Dr Jekyll (1960): A scientist wants to reveal the two sides of man so experiments on himself and turns into a part time bastard. Decent retelling of a familiar story, with Christopher Lee great in a supporting role.

Three (2002): An anthology from Korea, China and Thailand of stories about death. The Korean one is my personal favourite of the three, and the darkest, although they’re all at least okay. All of them are quite unusual, at least from a western perspective.

The Phantom of Soho (1964): Someone is murdering powerful men all connected to a particular nightclub. Seems to be an early example of the killer POV, and has a certain seediness that would appear in later slashers and gialli. A good mystery at its centre too.

Weapons (2025): After most of a class of schoolchildren run off and disappear, their teacher comes under suspicion. Constructed like a jigsaw puzzle with a dark sense of humour. Fits together brilliantly and has an absolutely batshit crazy finale. Excellent film.

The Ugly Stepsister (2025): A girl is put through some brutal beauty treatments in order to gain the love of a prince. The Cinderella story from a different perspective, and with a helping of gruesomeness. Not very subtle but looks and sounds amazing. Also quite humorous.

Nightwatch (1994): A student starts a job at a morgue and is dragged into an escalating game of dare by his unhinged friend. Meanwhile, women are being scalped and he’s a suspect. Twisty little Danish affair that goes in unexpected directions and with two great leads.

Sleep (2020): A woman haunted by strange dreams visits the hotel that frequently appears in them when she finds out it’s real. She has a breakdown and her daughter tries to figure out what the fuck is going on. Doesn’t reveal its hand till late on, and has a weird vibe throughout. Good stuff.

The Last Broadcast (1998): A documentary maker believes a man accused of a triple murder may be innocent. A good idea but a bit tedious for long stretches, and with a twist that doesn’t really feel right.

Keeper (2025): A chap takes his girlfriend to his family’s cabin in the woods. This does not bode well for the lady. Distinctly a Perkins film, replete with his trademark weirdness and folk horror, which personally I love. Fantastic score that works wonderfully with the imagery.

Jacob’s Ladder (1990): A Vietnam veteran is haunted by flashbacks and starts seeing demons all over the damn place. He can’t figure out what’s real and what isn’t. Complex but engaging and genuinely harrowing, with some proper crazy looking demonic visions. Quite a unique film.

Coyotes (2025): A couple and their teen daughter are cut off from most people after a storm brings a power cut. Then a load of coyotes turn up. Very uneven tone that never gets the mix between horror and comedy right. Has a few good moments, though could have been a lot better.

Grandmother’s House (1988): A brother and sister are taken in by their grandparents after their father dies. The boy suspects the old couple to be up to no good. Fairly tame but enjoyably twisty with a pretty wild ending.

Darkroom (1989): A keen photographer stalks mostly one family and kills a bunch of them as well as a few people connected to them. Pretty tame in terms of violence but does have a few little twists to keep it interesting. A decent late 80s slasher when the genre was dying.

The Descent (2005): A group of friends go caving to help one of their number deal with a tragedy. The cave is dangerous enough but then weird beasts show up to make things worse. Utterly gripping and incredibly tense even before the balls out horror begins. An outstanding film.

Guts of a Virgin (1986): A film crew are attacked by a big bloke whilst staying at an abandoned house. Mostly soft core porn really with occasional bursts of violence. Does have a certain amount of style though and is pretty damn weird.

The Stuff (1985): An industrial saboteur is hired to find out how a popular new dessert is made. It actually comes out of the ground and is very dangerous. A mix of body horror and conspiracy thriller done in comedic fashion. Works quite well and has some good practical effects.

Deadly Manor (1990): A group of young people on the way to a lake pick up a hitchhiker and end up stranded at a mysterious old house. Then someone starts killing them. A dull slasher that feels like an Italian horror thanks to the dubbing. Has its moments but mostly forgettable.

Stranger (1991): A female taxi driver with a shady past is stalked by a customer who starts following her in a 4x4. Reminiscent of Duel but in an urban setting and with a dose of Japanese quirkiness. A really good film about loneliness whilst surrounded by people.

Demonia (1990): A group of archaeologists working in Sicily come across a haunted chapel. One woman in the group is drawn to it. Fulci disowned this but it’s not that bad. Has some of his usual bizarre deaths and makes sense for the most part. Decent little folk horror.
