I’m going round to a friend’s house this teatime to watch the Winslet/Diaz Christmas film The Holiday. Despite my enthusiasm for Christmas films, I’ve never seen it, on the grounds that it’s too high-budget to fit my strict criteria.

A staycation is when you stay at home. Therefore a micro-staycation is presumably when you stay in the smallest room.

When you’re on the phone to a specialist cancer insurer but the line isn’t good so I’ve been standing by my open window shouting intimate details about my peritoneal tumours and ascites drainage… 😬

I’m going to assume this means skiing or diving or similar, not “going to art galleries.”

I’ve been pretty sanguine about cancer but today I need to sort travel insurance which is going to cost a lot more than it used to. Worse than that - I will probably have to Phone People Up to get a good deal. Could this be the thing that finally breaks me.

Phew. That was stressful. And some excellent tennis. Brilliant tournament from Donna Vekic and how good to see Emma Raducanu fit and playing so well and so freely.

Vekic has been on fire all this week. Good to see Raducanu start to put some excellent points together but this is such a tough match.

I went into Maternal Instinct on Netflix knowing nothing about it. About 30 minutes from the end I thought: holy fuck, it’s *that* story. Devastating.

On the bright side, I’ll get marking finished tomorrow and also my sister and mother are coming down. I haven’t seen my mum since last summer when I was looking after her through her own ovarian cancer scare and I just thought I had IBS because I was so worried about her.

Just occurred to me that I’ll need to go through the rigmarole of sorting out my annual travel insurance and getting quotes from specialist providers ahead of my holiday in ten days. I don’t often say fuck cancer about my own health but what an absolute administrative pain it is.

This is good to hear about the Lounges.

You know those Lounges - it’s a chain, and they have names with an O on the end… Sure, the food’s not brilliant. But how nice to have a place you can go at a random time like 5pm when one person wants to eat but another just wants a drink and someone else wants coffee. And it’s all very relaxed.

This is lovely. Sarah is one of the good’uns in comedy. That prize for the Best Newcomer will make a big difference to someone’s life and career.

I enjoyed this article. I told an American music mate of mine to go and see The Fall when they played his local venue. He got there late and was let in for free - the guy on the door said “they suck so fuckin’ hard I’d feel bad charging you.”

I’m currently reading an excellent book that I found in the depths of my unread list on my Kindle. Must have bought it years ago. It’s by Laura Spinney and it’s about the Spanish Flu epidemic. It’s really interesting. But what’s disconcerting is that it was written pre-2020.

Having to be stern with myself not to feel guilty about knocking off early today. I’ve made good progress with marking today but my entire face hurts from my dental encounter this morning. And I’m probably still not at entirely normal energy levels. Paracetamol, Puzzler and a cuppa awaits.

I had my filling. My dentist is lovely and she numbed me so I didn’t feel a thing but the NOISE and the VIBRATION. We were laughing together at how tense I was. I may have used the words “worse than chemo.” I used to be good at dentists.

It’s all a bit depressing, innit. Riots and the fucking World Cup. Thank goodness I’ve got the dentist to cheer me up.

Facebook has reminded me of the time I got told by a woman in a clothes shop that the very pretty blouse I was thinking of buying probably wouldn’t fit me “because all our clothes are one-size, and only go up to a 14.” I am a size 14.

I had a choice of 9am or 3pm for today’s dental appointment. Guess which time I’m now regretting choosing? I am having my first filling in years due to the fact that when I was feeling horrible post-chemo, fruit pastilles were one of the things I liked eating. So this is cancer’s fault.

I am watching actual grass court tennis and I love this moment of the year.

Netflix algorithms are suggesting the Red Riding Trilogy in a category called “Watch on a Third Date”. My ex-partner and I had that on our Sky box for years waiting till we were both mentally well enough to watch the second episode. We never got there, so it’s not gonna happen on a third date.

I’m enjoying American Visions on BBC iPlayer. Also I am 12 years old.

A woman on Substack who told me I should try a wig as I’d “feel happier with pretty hair” has apologised. She says she now realises that hair is the “least of a person’s problems when they are fighting for their life.” People can be so weird, can’t they?

I’ve finally made it as an author - I’ve had one of those spam AI messages suggesting help in positioning one of my books. Unfortunately not one of the three novels I’ve actually published but one by a different Jane Hill…
