We mourn the passing of Dr. Quintard Taylor Jr., esteemed historian and founder of @blackpastorg. Teaching at @pullman.wsu.edu in the 1970s, Dr. Taylor began exploring the histories of Black communities in the Pacific Northwest, work he later said “set my career and my life trajectory.”

WSU Pullman plays host to the Billy Frank, Jr. maquette (half-scale model statue) through the May 3 commencement. Washington State passed legislation in 2021 to send a statue of activist and humanitarian Billy Frank Jr. (Nisqually Tribe) to National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C.

Three Cougs meet in Congress.... This past week, Dr. Ryan Booth, met with two recent Coug alums in the halls of Congress. Jack Bridgewater (right) and Patrick Brower (left) are currently working in Rep. Michael Baumgartner's office in Washington, DC.

2/12: Dr. Whalen's History 300 course was joined by Minh Elan (Adult Services Manager, Neill Public Library); Alex Otero (volunteer archivist, Whitman County Historical Society); & Dulce Kersting-Lark (WSU History Department MA, 2013, Head, Special Collections and Archives at University of Idaho).

Graduate students Alison Moon and Berit Davis have teamed up with new Bunchgrass Historian editor Dr. Katy Whalen to revitalize the Whitman County Historical Society's semi-annual publication.

Since this is the centennial of the 1924 Snyder Act-also known as the Indian Citizenship Act-let’s dig deeper into the idea of Native American citizenship for Native American Heritage Month. The 1924 Act did not solve everything and some states continued to disenfranchise Native people from voting.
