I think there are a fair number of people who wanted the promises without the follow-through because they knew it would antagonize people they found annoying, but now they’re actually having the horrific promises fulfilled they have buyer’s remorse.

The way dumb kids become smarter adults is facing consequences for their mistakes. Some embarrass themselves while drunk and learn to drink in moderation. Some have to repeat a class and learn to study better (or to change a major). Some lose a job opportunity and learn not to get certain tattoos.
