We experience our thoughts subjectively, meaning we emotionally attach to them. This distorts our view of Reality. In order to distinguish reality vs our emotional biases we need to gain objectivity over our thoughts. The 1st step on the path to objectivity is learning the skill of Mindfulness.

The first step in learning to control your thoughts is simply observing them in the moment, while they're happening. This is what they call "Mindfulness Practice", and it is an incredibly useful skill.
