59 years later, GO Transit now operates 3,567 weekly trips across 8 regional rail lines. The fleet has grown to 91 locomotives, 18 self-propelled railcars, and 979 double decker passenger coaches. A total of 430,000 people can be transported at once on the GO fleet.

GO Transit service launched with 327 weekly trips on a single commuter rail line. To operate this service, a fleet of 8 locomotives, 9 self-propelled railcars, and 40 single-level passenger coaches were introduced. GO Transit was the first modern commuter rail service in Canada.

59 years ago today, on May 23, 1967, the first GO Transit trains departed from Oakville and Pickering bound for Toronto Union Station. GO Transit began as a single commuter line, with trains every 20 minutes during rush hour, and every hour off-peak and on weekends.

Stratford GO Station reopens for service on July 6, 2026! One round trip will be extended from Kitchener GO per day. This is the 72nd GO Transit station, and the only GO Station to be located outside the Greater Golden Horseshoe region.

Renovations of Oakville GO, GO Transit’s 2nd busiest station, will be beginning soon! Planned upgrades include: • New partial length platform canopies and heated shelters • New pedestrian bridge • One additional elevator and staircase entrance per platform • Six new bus platforms

Tomorrow, GO Transit will continue to run a significantly reduced rail service schedule on all lines due to derailment-related infrastructure damage, and restricted capacity in the Union Station Rail Corridor. Delays and cancellations are to be expected.

The rail platforms between Yonge Street and Lower Jarvis Street will see massive changes in the future. Going off multiple public sources, most platforms will be combined and widened. Some platforms could be extended by up to 350 metres east of their current location.

Layer 13 focuses on a portion of the Union Station rail platform level, between Yonge Street and Lower Jarvis Street: • Platforms 16-17 & 26-27

The rail platforms between Bay Street and Yonge Street will see massive changes in the future. Going off multiple public sources, most platforms will be combined and widened, at least 6 new staircases and 3 elevators will be added to improve crowd flow and accessibility.

Line 5 Eglinton opens on February 8th! Line 5 will improve transit service along Eglinton Avenue, and act as Torontos second crosstown line. In the future, Line 5 could be extended to Pearson Airport and connected to multiple proposed and under construction transit lines.

Last Wednesday all 3 levels of government announced that Kitchener Central GO Station is fully funded This integrated transit hub will be located on the Kitchener Line just west of the current GO station Once Kitchener Central GO opens, Kitchener GO will permanently close.

Wrapping up the year with my collection of PRESTO cards reaching 33! This year a total of 10 limited edition PRESTO cards were released, the most special types of cards ever made in a single year.

Line 6 Finch West opens in just 4 days! Upon opening, Line 6 will have one connection to the existing network, at Finch West. In the future, this line could be extended to Pearson Airport, with 5 additional connections to other lines, building a stronger rapid transit network.

Yesterday, an updated version of the GTHA in-delivery transit projects map was posted on LinkedIn. For the first time: all Regional Rail, Light Rail, and Subway Lines in the GTHA region are represented on one map, as well as all provincially funded or supported expansions.

Today Mount Dennis GO Station opened, with trains between Downtown Toronto, Brampton-Kitchener and Pearson Airport on average every 10 minutes. This is one of many regional rail stations coming to the City of Toronto over the next decade, as GO Transit continues to expand.

More details on the modified St. Clair-Old Weston Station have been released Part of the platform will be used by the UP Express, longer 4 to 5 car trains will be able to stop here. The rest will remain unused. In the future, this station may be a stop on the GO Transit Kitchener Line

Did You Know: There was going to be a third new line included in the GO 2.0 transit plan announced earlier this year? The cancelled Lakeshore-Midtown Line would have travelled from Oakville, through Mississauga, Midtown Toronto, and Scarborough, before terminating in Oshawa.

Was anyone at the Confederation GO Station grand opening last Monday? If so, was there a special edition PRESTO card themed to the event handed out?

The planned St. Clair-Old Weston Station has been significantly changed According to documents from the City of Toronto and Metrolinx, this station will now only be a stop on the UP Express Line. Previously, it was planned as a stop on both UP Express and the GO Transit Kitchener Line.

Today Metrolinx updated the GO Transit regional rail system maps These updated maps now display TTC rapid transit lines & connections. In the future, the TTC should add GO Transit lines to the subway system map, so all maps in our region show an integrated transit network.

Confederation GO Station opens for service tomorrow! A new hub for regional rail, regional buses, and local buses in east Hamilton. This is the 70th GO Transit station, first to open since 2021, and the first Lakeshore West Line station to open since 2015.

This morning the Government of Ontario announced significant service increases to the GO Transit Kitchener Line, starting November 23rd: • Weekend service to Kitchener GO • 30 minute weekend service between Union Station & Bramalea GO • New infrastructure partnership with CN Rail

Fun Fact: Ever heard of the GO Transit Hamilton-Guelph Line? This line was proposed in 1989 by the Think Rail Group, as part of a larger proposal for transit in Ontario. This line would've travelled from the City of Hamilton to Guelph, linking 3 cities together in the western half of the GTHA.

Fun Fact: Ever heard of the GO Transit Brantford-London Line? This line was proposed in 1989 by the Think Rail Group, as apart of a larger proposal for transit expansions in Ontario. This line would have travelled from the City of Toronto to London, along Lake Ontario and through Brantford.

Network status info screens for all regional rail, subway, and light rail lines is great to see! As transit continues to improve in our region, people will take more complex trips across multiple modes, so an information hub like this is important

Additionally, the Barrie was to also be rerouted out of Union Station to instead terminate at the new underground station in the vicinity of Union. Both lines being rerouted would have alleviated crowding and provided more capacity for other rail services at Union Station.

Fun Fact: Did you know in 2012 Metrolinx proposed a reroute of the GO Transit Georgetown Line? The proposed reroute would have taken the Georgetown Line out of Union Station, instead terminating at a new underground station in the vicinity of Union. This reroute never happened

As GO Transit renovates stations and shifts to shorter trains, train length information becomes more important. 3 things Metrolinx can do: • Expand the boarding area pilot network wide • Add train length to the Union Station departure screens • Add arrows to digital signage

Today the Government of Ontario announced their commitment to build Woodbine GO Station. This station will be located on the Kitchener Line between Malton and Etobicoke North GO Station. Once Woodbine opens, Etobicoke North GO Station will permanently close.

Over the next 2 years, the City of Toronto will begin the Great Hall Chandelier and Cove Lighting Program. This project includes 3 new LED chandeliers, which will better illuminate the hall below, and new cove lighting, which will brighten the historical elements around the hall.

Did you know? The Great Hall at Union Station Toronto is receiving a big lighting upgrade? Today, the Great Hall is lit by a single sodium-vapor light hung in the centre of the hall, which leads to a gloomy atmosphere during the day, and improperly lit space and at night.

58 years ago, on May 23, 1967, the first GO Transit trains departed from Oakville and Pickering bound for Toronto Union Station. That was so long ago that the time between the end of World War I in 1918 and the beginning of GO was shorter than the time between 1967 and today

Did You Know: Toronto Union Station currently has 10 different wayfinding standards in use. Each signage standard uses different icons, fonts, and prioritises info differently, making navigation confusing. Unifying the signage would improve accessibility, navigation, and crowd flow.

Later this year, OnXpress Transportation Partners, the company selected to deliver GO Expansion, was supposed to take over operations and maintenance of the GO Transit Rail Network from Alstom Transport Canada. This has been cancelled Alstom will continue in their role going forward.

Clearly the correct solution here is to rip out the useless, ugly, 1900s ass, bad for ops, “heritage” trainshed; replace it and electrify with OCS. The fact that “municipal heritage” overrides the most important infrastructure project in the country is a MASSIVE indictment of our planning process.
