@orcawatcher.bsky.social and I had an interesting encounter with Bigg’s killer whale, T046D, Thursday and it included him vocalizing through the hull of the boat. This video is about the audio. We did not have a hydrophone down. At times he would be 200+ yards away and we could still hear him.

My week in thirty one seconds. This curious female calf of known mom, “TW”, was really intrigued by the aliens in her world. What a privilege.

Heading offline for the rest of the week to spend time in the company of these lovely beings. ✌️

We got out with J Pod for our 6th encounter of the year! We were able to confirm that J62 is female and document all 26 members! We were also able to confirm that J35 is no longer carrying the carcass of J61. Check out the encounter and more photos at the link below.

With another year around the sun behind me I was looking forward to seeing some whales to mark the day. Who knew that among them we’d find a brand new calf? This kid was with a group we saw just days ago with no calf and its dorsal fin was still fairly soft and floppy. Happy birthday, little one!

Don’t mind me, I’ll just be crying about this later. 😅

Yesterday was a rough day, but it was improved by encountering a rarely seen group out over the canyons. It’s my first time seeing this big bull, SWA114 “Zane”. Two more days on the water for this trip and then back to start my own season at home.

I’m sad. I’m angry. I’m scared. And I’m so very tired. This is what I voted against but somehow enough Americans thought he was the better choice. I know I need to rally for the fight but today, today I think all I can manage is to be alive and upright.

This big male #orca is known as “Kraken”. We had a visit with him today while out with Naturaliste Charters from Bremer Bay in Western Australia. If you’re looking to see these whales make sure to book a tour with them. They know what they’re doing and operate respectfully around the #whales.

You might think this is a photo of weird dolphins but these are actually Gray’s beaked #whales. Beaked whales are generally cryptic—inhabiting deep water and some diving for hours. Most species are documented only through beached animals so it’s always exciting to see them living their best lives!

If you’ve gone stargazing with me you’ve probably heard me say that the stars make me feel small in the best possible way. Tonight, I’m taking a little extra comfort in just how small I am in comparison. How small we all are in comparison.
