Metcalfe et al. review the evidence for weakened magnetic braking around the Sun's age by homogenizing the stellar parameters from previous studies that constrained the wind braking of stars with observed magnetic fields and x-ray fluxes (proxy for mass-loss): arxiv.org/pdf/2509.03717

ESA Solar Orbiter is zooming towards the Sun (perihelion at 0.29au on the 16th Sept.), currently at 0.44au the spacecraft has a nice view of the south pole (combined image from EUI/FSI). Coronal holes, filaments, active regions, lots of things to investigate!

ESA's Solar Orbiter @esa.int @science.esa.int has begun to sned data home again after it passed superior conjunction on the far-side of the Sun to Earth. With Solar Orbiter slightly below the solar equator and Earth slightly above, we get a nice 360 degree view of the solar surface. ☀️🔍👀

Similarly, the total surface magnetic flux (computed from Carrington maps of the Sun's photospheric magnetic field) is moving back down towards cycle 24. Even at the peak of cycle 25, we were far short of the unsigned magnetic flux from cycle 23! Monthly sunspot number dropped right off in May!

With @esa.int Solar Orbiter back to the Sun's far side, we are again tracking active region over ~ 4pi steradians (note: Orbiter's inclination). We have been able to track AR14055 since it left Earth view on the 15th April (now at the east-limb). AR14055 was producing M-class flares on the far side.

We have been very lucky to have such a large coronal hole for ESA Solar Orbiter and NASA Parker Solar Probe to investigate over the last few weeks! Solar Orbiter will continue probe this region with another block of high resultion/cadence remote-sensing in early April. Looking forward to the data!

This week, @esa.int Solar Orbiter will investigate the fast solar wind by taking high resolution images of coronal holes (associated dark patches on the Sun) for comparison with in-situ measurements of the solar wind. ~ A third of the Earth's orbital distance and 18 degrees below the ecliptic. Thinking about ESA Solar Orbiter's next perihelion in March/April. After the Venus gravity assist, its orbit will be more inclined, allowing us better view the Sun's south pole with high-resolution remote-sensing and scan latitudinal structure in the solar wind with the in-situ instruments (1/2)

Parker Solar Probe is scanning across the Sun's surface at less than ten solar radii! The 22nd close approach of PSP is taking place directly infront of Earth, Solar Orbiter, and STEREO-A, so we can have a good guess of the connectivity down to the solar surface:

The current coverage of the solar surface in EUV from heliospheric observatories, GOES/SDO/SOHO, Solar Orbiter, and STEREO-A. With Solar Orbiter trailing Earth and STEREO-A ahead of us. (1/3)

Our recent work has just been published in A&A! We developed a retrieval framework for the large-scale magnetic fields of objects emitting radio bursts driven by the electron cyclotron maser (ECM) instability. We applied it to the brown dwarf J0623, and found that it has a large magnetic obliquity!

Solar cycle dashboard: The Sun's southern hemisphere is as active as cycle 23 back in 2003, whilst the northern hemisphere looks more like cycle 24 in 2014. The reversal of the Sun's dipole magnetic field has been stalled since the start of 2024, and has recently moved back towards the equator...

Really proud of this work (my first time being fully responsible), where I show how the repeated emergence of solar active regions near one another can significantly inhibit the evolution of the coronal magnetic field. (1/3) Published in A&A here: www.aanda.org/articles/aa/...
