I’ve been playing with the word "Belief" with cyanotype and paper construction. I developed a unique technique utilizing multiple plates of glass to stagger the UV exposure to create variation and depth, leaving a foggy, jumbled appearance-the opposite of what we tend to experience with our beliefs.

My series Atlas explores lineage and cultural beliefs through which I seek to piece together how my beliefs and sense of self have been shaped. For my upcoming show in NYC, I have been focusing on creating strong wall pieces and a few interconnected themes have begun to emerge and intertwine.

My vision for Atlas draws from the look and feel of old books, field notebooks, and timeworn documents. This is a popular aesthetic and there are about a billion YouTube videos on how to make materials look aged, a process called "distressing." So many techniques to explore.

I searched for a way to make paper look like old parchment. I landed on rice paper, treated with a combination of acrylic, water, and instant coffee. I glued it to another distressed piece of paper, but only around the edges. I am experimenting with different pens and paint on this unusual surface.

I have been learning to crochet, largely so I can make things imperfectly, seemingly coming undone. Ornate gilt frames are interesting. I think that if you frame anything in one of those it lends it and air of legitimacy and importance. I had played with some frame stencils before I left, and just popped them into my portfolio. I wondered what cyanotype would look like in the stenciled frames...

The first experiments I did with laying my hand on the cyanotype FLAT on the paper. But my favorite results came from when I laid my hand loosely on the paper, allowing light to circulate around my fingers and hand. In the second one I wrote the lyrics of a 1984 Laurie Anderson song, Hothead.

I had fun experimenting with laying my hand on the cyanotypes while they were being exposed- also sprinkling water on it makes a speckled effect. Here I had two passes- first one you see on the left. Then I added more chemical in the middle of the hand, placed a plant on it and exposed it again.

Taking advantage of the bright Mexican sun, I brought my cyanotype kit: measuring cup, bowl, foam brush, and chemicals in travel shampoo bottles. The papers had to be coated at night and dried in darkness, away from UV rays. Where to put them in my hotel room? Ah! My empty suitcases! #cyanotype

To make an inspiring art set up for my Mexico trip, I made a little travel “portfolio.” The cover is a “failed” cyanotype, and two Japanese woodcut reproductions on the inside covers. I filled it with folded papers, loose pages, cyanotypes, and stencil experiments—surfaces to paint and draw on.

Over the years, I have gone through some drama about making art while on vacation. So, on our most recent Mexican vacation, I seem to have finally cracked the code to happy artmaking while traveling. In fact, I have even elevated my experience into a personal, mini art retreat! Not a bad life, eh?
