The face of an eagle looks regal and, letās be honest, kind of angry! Bald Eagles have a thick ridge, called the supraorbital ridge, over their eyes that helps them see during times of bright sunlight, and gives them an "angry" or "fierce" look!

A rare visitor at the Alaska Raptor Center! Ospreys arenāt common in Southeast Alaska, but after last weekās high winds, one found its way to us. After a quick check-up to make sure everything looked good, this impressive raptor was released back into the wild!

Did you know wild raptors sometimes arrive carrying tiny hitchhikers like lice and mites? These pests can sap a birdās strength and spread disease. During our intake exams we give our patients a gentle, bird-safe treatment to clear out the freeloaders.

Whatās on the menu for a Bald Eagle? š½ļø Fish makes up 80% of a Bald Eagleās diet, both in the wild and here at the Alaska Raptor Center! But these birds are opportunistic eaters, also dining on birds, small mammals, and carrion.

Did you know that a Bald Eagle's eyesight is approximately 8x sharper than the human eye? š¦ šļø In comparison, the fovea in the human eye has around 140,000 cones per millimeter, but in the central fovea of a Bald Eagle, there are over a MILLION cones per millimeter!

Did you know, Red-tailed Hawks, like Jake, have a powerful, raspy scream that Hollywood loves to use? Whenever you hear a shrill raptor cry in movies or TV shows, it's often a Red-tailed Hawk, no matter what species is on screen.
