So to sum up the opinions of the Danish government: The PM and FM have said that the Iranian government a repressive state and an enemy, but that Denmark was not notified of nor took part in the US/Israeli attack on Iran. DK govt supports de-escalation.

1) So given what I've seen around the English language press about Europeans getting complacent, I think it's worth highlighting todays headlines in the Danish news, at least on Danmark's Radio. First there's the cringe, it drew headlines that Trump shared his V-day card featuring Greenland.

Reading the English-language news you'd think that it was the Danish PM alone who was going to have a meeting with Rubio, but Greenland's PM is accompanying her and I feel like that is not trivial minutiae when Greenland is the topic at hand. #greenland

If he sticks with this then the negotiating strategy of the Danish government has succeeded - Force him to explain what he needs in Greenland to protect it - and make sure that putting it there is multilateral and doesn't include a transfer or sale of Greenland. Will he stick with it? We doubt it.

Of course nobody in Denmark or Greenland genuinely thinks that Trump's change of mind is any assurance that he won't just change it again, he reserves his dwindling supply of honesty for Putin's red telephone and for the convicted sex trafficker who was married to Epstein.

Today Trump says at Davos that the military threat is off the table so long as immediate negotiations for the US to acquire Greenland are started. Foreign Minister Løkke says: "We will not negotiate over selling Greenland." Nothing has changed: It is not for sale.

It's a good thing the European negotiating position on Greenland is "No, we back Denmark and Greenland." The Anglo-French negotiating position in 1938 was "The Sudetenland is ethnically German, we recognise it as German territory already, and demand our ally cede it at once and without compensation"

I'm surprised that it took this long, but the US government is suddenly showing an interest in what is known in Denmark as the "Spiral case" - There was a policy to sterilize some inuit women in Greenland, most of this playing out in the 1960s-70s but some cases happening as late as the early 90s.

Just as a reminder, last year #Greenland held elections, and not a single person was elected who was open to Greenland becoming American, and the lone candidate who said they were willing to believe that Trump was capable of negotiating in good faith got too few votes (1.1%) to get a seat.
